There has just been another sudden fierce downpour, but with a beautiful outcome. There is a complete(one advantage of flat terrain!) very bright rainbow with a fainter twin above it shown up against a pale grey sky - the aftermath of the rain and dispersing rapidly now to leave bright (as washed clean of the dust load) blue sky.
Despite being SW there has just been so much wind that it's kept the temperatures down, and it's due to get even stronger through the night and into tomorrow so even chiller. Such a shame with all the blossom out.

Rather blustery, middling sort of day here today - spits and spots of rain from a pretty solid grey altostratus shield, just the odd blob of sun penetrating through, understorey of clag. The weekend promises to be cold everywhere, with considerable snow expected in Scotland tomorrow and Friday; but it is expected to warm up quite a lot next week.
      Diabetes blood test, lol!

      Fine here today, but cold.

Nearly a gale force westerly here now - unusual for London on a westerly, but unsurprising, given the tight isobars wrapped around the associated low.

Blowing a hooley out there this morning...the cover of the polytunnel did a runner...again.

I drove back from my Maw's in Paisley yesterday evening. The weather was sunny with rainy showers, so I was looking out for rainbows as I drove. As I came out of Glasgow the rainbow started to appear. As I got to Cumbernauld it was a full bow, and because the sun was getting close to setting it was one of those high rainbows, rather than the flatter ones you get nearer the middle of the day. The left arm of the rainbow was an incredibly bright spectrum and for about five miles I was driving straight into that spectrum, which was doubled and was also reflecting back off the wet highway. It was stunning - wished I hadn't been driving and could have caught it in a photo, but it was tough enough to concentrate on driving through this wonder. The rainbow stayed with me till about Stirling when the weather opened out, as did the hills to the north. Nothing beats a good rainbow in my book.

So, what the song Somewhere Over the Rainbow says is actually true, then!

Very windy here. Luckily only scattered showers on my walk.

Far too much wind (peaks of 48 and 49 mph recorded late morning against a background of minimum mid 30s) and with some vicious squalls mixed in after lunch as well, some of hail rather than rain. Brief patches of sun and the cloud isn't particularly thick except when a squall goes over, so not as grey a day as might have been expected. Feeling cold in the house from the combination of wind and wet although the thermometer says 19 so not cold in reality.
I managed to miss the showers when I went out late morning but not the bombardment of rubbish from recycling bins - overfilled to begin with in too many cases. The council's choice of bin has a poorly designed lid which flips open at relatively low wind speeds and either tips the whole bin over if not very full or just exposes the contents to the wind and the chance of freedom to range far and wide. I've had to put bungee straps on both my bins as the wind is so strong today but with luck tomorrow will be calmer (forecast suggests so)and I can risk taking the one off the general waste to wait for collection. The days and times have changed and ours is now late afternoon/early evening (on Friday) rather than before 9am (on Monday) so a bit of a gamble.

Not a great looking day, outside, at the moment. Off to Lewes today, in view of getting a new mobility scooter.

Horizon to horizon cloudless after a whacking overnight frost! Fab sun as yet.............But, WoW is it cold! Northerly wind, -2C as I post.

Exactly the same as here! Heavy showers were predicted on the lunchtime forecast for here, but the question is, will the high cloud veil spillover from that potent weather system over N France be enough to dampen any convection. Plenty of cumulus growth at present but not much uplift being evidenced. Cool day.

Almighty downpour (including hail) for a few minutes here; luckily I had just arrived at the GP surgery (yet another free injection: shingles) so could shelter indoors. The washing on the line is significantly wetter than when I hung it out, though.

However, the soft water rinsing will give that washing a lovely finish!

The breaking up of the cirrus underway is now allowing for more convection, with some handsome cumulus towers building up, and a few large raindrops just now. The number of showers turning thundery across Wales is probably explained by orographic forcing. It will be interesting to see how widely this develops from surface warming alone as the afternoon proceeds before falling ground temperatures restrict further cloud growth. A cold night in prospect means I will be needing gloves for my 3-mile ride to the large Sainsbury's off Dog Kennel Hill tomorrow morning; however, here we're still on track for a considerable warm-up next week.

                              ...
                              Whatever happened to acid rain?
I don't imagine that, with all the atmospheric pollution generally around, our rain water is that soft.
But then, we have Yorkshire Water up here.

Rain water is naturally slightly acidic and I think pollution generally just adds to that? Unless you live in coughing distance of a limestone quarry I doubt much alkaline material gets added to airborne water. What comes up from the ground is another matter altogether of course. I use distilled vinegar in the final rinse cycle sometimes to remove the hard water/detergent buildup on things like towels and make them less sandpaper like.
It's been a sunny, dry, if rather chilly day today, such a relief from yesterday. Tomorrow looks as if it should be OK as well, although possibly colder, so I think running the mower over the grass again and trimming the edges might be on the to-do list.
