Oh well! at least the days are getting longer...marginally!
    Storm Malik, apparently...

First I heard of it was reading the I newspaper, just now

Vivid sunset - altocumulus (bubble wrap type) spreading from the NW over stratocumulus here, following a very pleasant day in all. including a 4-mile circular venture into Croydon territory .

A breezy one this morning which makes the 9C seem 5!

Brilliantly sunny, with just a few tiny cumulus clouds whizzing down on this fresh to strong nor-westerly - 7 degs at noon, and unlikely to rise further today.

I've just calculated the averages for the month: 7.8 C max - 0.8 C above average; 2.1 min - 0.9 C below. Not often do the month's temps average so closely to the long terms, although it has happened more than once in the past year. That said, January proved to be an exceptionally dry month, which is worrying given that it is in the winter months that London's underground aquifers need to fill up adequately to provide for the summer, when, rather than filtering through to the clay lining the porous chalk anticline London sits atop, rainfall just tends to run off, ending up back in the sea. And with a very strong Azores high positioned just to our south, further north than would usually be the case mid-winter, and pushing the jet stream far to the north, there seems little change in sight for the forseeable future.

A bright colourful dawn, and plenty of sun since then but also a lot of cloud, some of it very black, batting across the sky. The wind is taking its time to abate and the gusts are quite vicious - and cold. The lack of rain has been a blessing hereabouts as the combination of wind and high tides has led to flooding which would have been much worse if there has been surface water for watercourses to accommodate as well.

Mostly cloudy today, apparently. Low of 9C high of 13C!

I think that 13 C high could well be breached! Along with the professionals I've been well and truly caught out by the breaking up of the stratus, indicating a drying out of the airstream that has not been taken into account. A Föhn effect, probably, the wind being from the north of west and having crossed the Welsh hills, Cotswolds, Chilterns etc.

I think we would have got beyond 13 today without the wind(gusting to high 30s), as the recording station showed 13 at 1-00pm even with the wind. Plenty of sun and there's now little sign of the rain we had at some point during the night but at least the dust has been stuck back down for now on my road.
