"As torrents in summer" (E Elgar) comes to mind reading that! Daft words but popular with audiences when part of our choir concerts.

Similarly "As dew in April which falleth on the grass" in the words from Vaughan Williams's Five Mystical Songs which I sang at school - we nicknamed them "Vaughan Williams's Spectacles Songs" because nobody bothered explaining the meaning of "mystical". I don't ever remember singing any Elgar while at school, even in the choir. Had I been in the physics class I could have carped that dew does not actually fall on grass - but the 15th century (?) penner of those words wouldn't have known that either.

38º here today. I'm staying in and keeping the air conditioners on. Already switched to working at night.

          Don't blame you!

It's about 17 here, been raining on and off.

Too much! There's quite a lot of discussion on the heatwave currently affecting SE Europe at the moment on various weather sites.

Here a day of April showers and relatively cool temperatures - 19 C at noon when one would expect 22 C in late July, now 16 C in the middle of a downpour. It looks like we are to be "blessed" with sub-average temperatures going into August here.

              Thunderstorm now approaching.

Later: That was a massive deluge, for about 5 minutes, although the cell had thundered itself out by the time of arrival, to my surprise.

There has been some very localised urban flooding to the south of the county but for the rest occasional showers, admittedly some heavy but very brief, and the wind is ensuring that little evidence remains after a while. Reluctant to talk things up as a battering storm wouldn't be welcome or helpful, but let's just say I'm not putting the hoses away yet. The forecast suggests more rain in the offing later - possibly.

I would say that any possibilities of London having a hosepipe ban has been ruled out for at least the next 3 years!

Going to be a good day today. A mild one but with sunny intervals. A high of 20C.

Bright dry start to the day but a very blustery wind and distinctly cool, especially in the shade. There was evidently a fair amount of rain last night which has managed to get to the soil under the jungle of beans and tomatoes - hurrah! There can't have been much air movement as the coverage is uniform and plants are still upright - some even more so than previously now they've been rehydrated. It's a pity about the wind as it's going to take a lot of the moisture away, quite apart from keeping temps down.

"... a pity about the wind..." - well at least we'll get some green electricity!

But not the infrastructure to make best use of it...
