No rain here, 19C and even occasional glimpses of sun. Met Office has a widespread thunderstorm warning but my lightning app shows none anywhere.

Looks as if it will be distinctly hit and miss here; according to the map there are lumps of activity across the area but depending on which way they travel it is possible that just here will be between the action. It's overcast at present and there has been a bit of desultory and very brief (hardly getting to minutes) leakage. I have bed linen going through the wash at present and will likely risk putting it out as even a brief flap will do some good and will offset any brief bits of rain. Next door is a bit stuck as she has a large new shed that needs painting and limited time to do it, but painting if it rains heavily will be a waste of time, effort and materials, and the forecast for the next couple or three days doesn't look much more helpful at this stage. I would rather like some quantity of rain for the garden(but without the wrecking tantrums of wind etc as climbing peas and beans are well up their poles and the peas in particular are very leafy and vulnerable to the sail effect) to save the faff of getting the hose and cans out, but suspect that may not happen, or not in sufficient quantity.

The yellow triangle warnings seem to have been entirely unnecessary hereabouts. There was a sprinkle of rain early morning and there are some hefty clouds sailing across the sky but I think they are the tailend of something that's already passed over and is possibly dumping further east. So plant watering - salad and newly planted veg - the order of the day before lunch; even if there is some further rain the wind sucks it away too quickly to do anything other than freshen things up. At the moment volunteer gardening on Tuesday looks as if it could be a damp session but much will depend on whether it's a belt of rain or separate lumps.

Seems like we're in for a bit of a blow down here tomorrow, particularly early afternoon following the second of two main rain belts - the timing of both being tricky, though the milking up of the sky already suggests the rain from the first will be here midway through this evening. Both rain belts will probably stall somewhere in the Scottish border region tomorrow afternoon, with the usual convective showers developing in their wake. Temperatures will continue a bit below expected norms for early July until Thursday - averages peak between 10 July and 20th August - but going by the 14 mile cycle ride I've just completed, that will be OK with me.

Many years ago, I visited a relative living in Bahrain. I was advised to go in March or November when it was cooler. I chose March and 'cooler' meant a daytime temperature of around 32 C! It was a very dry sort of heat but still very warm and I found it near the limit that I could comfortably bear. The hottest I've been in this country was 36 C in Derby, of all places, on July 25 2019."The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink
