Cooler than yesterday and lots of drizzle while out on my walk, but not enough to ruin my walk and not much wind to compensate.

We had a spectacular hailstorm yesterday at around 7pm. Within a few minutes, the decking and car were covered in white! Some of it was still there this morning. It's currently raining heavily here in the East Riding but this morning was gloriously sunny and so we were able to sit in the conservatory and enjoy it. It's too cold now though
          Best regards,
          Jonathan

Fair amount of sunshine and the occasional big black clouds appear to be all for show - pity as a bit of rain wouldn't go amiss - but golly the wind is cold. Good drying day but not for standing around admiring the scenery!

Snow and soft hail from a shower an hour ago while walking through the woods nearby - people looking up in astonishment, literally wondering what had hit them, as winds were light and it had felt quite warm in the April sunshine a few minutes earlier. There was talk on the forecast earlier on of the possibility of further snow hitting N Wales, followed by the Midlands, and then the South tonight and through tomorrow morning, as a rogue frontal system sneaks across from the NW. We could be on track for an exceptionally cold April this year.

It reached 9 C here - I just checked my max-min thermometer. The April air being so dry makes it quite possible for snow to reach ground level at such a temperature: at higher levels it is quite likely to be even colder than it would be for January in such an airstream, so the precipitation - snow and hail - has a head start, so to speak. The sun is now strong enough to warm up the ground - which would not be the case in a maritime arctic airstream such as this in mid-winter, as can be typically seen from airshots showing showers crowding down the east and west coasts whilst inland the sky would be clear - and the resultant convection from that ground level insolation is more than enough to produce shower clouds inland by this time of the year. As I write, another lot are massing to the north, so we can expect more snow and hail showers in the next hour or so, after which time the resultant cooling of ground temperatures combined with the waning sun will see cumulus convection coming to a halt.
