At night? A good electric blanket, the sort you can safely leave on overnight, is all you need plus usual bedclothes.

During the day, I have only one room kept heated in order to keep the bills down but never wear cotton next to the skin; a woolly jumper will keep you thoroughly warm or couple if venturing out of doors. M&S long pants keep your legs amazingly warm and can be highly recommended and two pairs of woolly socks should be sufficient.

During the 'beast from the east' three years ago when I had to spend some time out of doors, I wore two pairs of woolly socks, underwear plus M&S long pants, two pairs of trousers, two thick shirts, two woolly jumpers, fleece, Berghaus with hood, woolly hat, two pairs of gloves and I was still perishing!

I tend to keep extra pairs of this or that for really cold weather!

I'd forgotten that. Or, more accurately, forgotten about that!

Glad I don't need to use the car tomorrow and that doing the shopping doesn't have to be done first thing, given the frost and sub-zero temperatures through the night, and most of Friday by the look of it.

Down here, too! A heavy frost last might and this morning. Not much above zero today at all.

Warmer overnight, so no frost this morning, but it's just started to snow (gently).

Today, damp, milder, whiteout, fog down to fell roots.

I was expecting a palpable rise in temperature, but it hasn't happened.

                                V. unfriendly westerly really cooled the walk. Thermometer says 4C !! OK, yes, go with that for early Jan, but...but wind chill takes a LOT off that.
