With that enormous high pressure now established over western Siberia slowing the eastward momentum of Atlantic lows, questions are beginning to be asked in the weather community concerning a white Christmas. For the moment the high is sucking up air of a more SE than E European origin, and SE Europe still remains warm, following some exceptional late autumnal warmth there. So odds on are that, should a block form from the east, diverting approaching Atlantic fronts south across France and into the Med, it will turn out a coldish and claggy Xmas, temperatures a few degrees below normal everywhere (as they have been so far this month), but the only possibility of snow, rather than drizzly sleet, being restricted to east-facing parts of our northern hills, as moist North Sea air condenses orographically, or north-eastward-moving fronts come up against colder air ahead, coming in from the east.

A murky morning that felt much colder than it supposedly was, but at lunchtime there started to be separation between ground and sky murk, with the former disappearing. Although the cloud didn't break significantly there were occasional glimpses of watery blue and the light levels increased noticeably even though the sun didn't actually manage to fight through.

There seem to be a few showers around today, with half an hour just past of moderate rain here. Difficult to plan short distance ahead when there is so much low clag obscuring what's coming in at higher levels, and I have to pedal up to Brixton this afternoon, having failed to get my Xmas cards yesterday, the shop in question being choc-full of people, most of them queuing up in the only part of the premises accessible to the cards and calendars, and not wearing face masks. A woman waiting outside looked at me with a doubtful expression and said, without any encouragement from me,"I'm not going in there!" I see the temperature is just over 10 C, so at least I won't have to don gloves for my ride.
Continuing mild with rain at times, but becoming windier, seems to sum up the weekend to be expected.

Variations on/permutations of cloud, rain, drizzle, due to arrive here shortly by the looks of the weather map, with increasing wind just to spice things up a bit... Current external light levels likely to be the highest for the day, so getting progressively darker hours before 'sunset'. Not an inspiring day, made even worse by the news of the unravelling Brexit situation. Thank heavens for Sunday R3 schedule providing distraction.
