The forecast rain and possibly sleet turned out to be snow as I walked into town. Got well covered as the breeze was 'fresh', fortunately I was well wrapped and waterproof, but it all added an extra struggle to the putting on of mask and trying to see through fogged glasses. If it hadn't been market day I probably wouldn't have carried on but I wanted fish and greengrocery, and Saturday's forecast hadn't looked promising so it seemed best to do the shopping and library (open again hurrah!), and not have to go out tomorrow. The stallholders will have certainly earned whatever they make today.

Apologies for not predicting last night and this morning's snow. It appears to have affected parts of E Sussex and Kent, skirting to the east of London, where the temperature did not really fall low enough, though I would imagine we had some sleet over night here. Central Scotland really has had a hammering, with a dramatic thunder snowstorm reported at 4.30 this morning, also here on the lunchtime news. Below is the live link - for those who still may not believe it possible to have snow and thunder in conjunction!

I could hardly see what I was doing while processing my debit card at the checkout, and ended up just piling my groceries back into the trolley rather than wasting the queue's time trying to squeeze it into my back pack, which I then did outside. I can see this is going to be a problem for many people if we are to get a severe winter this year. We're also reaching that part of the pre-Xmas season when shoppers start piling up their trolleys with groceries and more, and already impatient queuers have to wait even longer. If this is when I finally succumb to The Virus it will be down to what I have thus far managed to avoid - namely being in close proximity in indoor situations.

I don't think apologies are needed - I looked quite late last night and the forecast still reckoned rain with sleet likely if showers were heavy. By 9 am it was obvious that the sleet was more snow than rain! - and stayed that way until well past midday. It seems counter-intuitive that a southerly airstream should result in such cold conditions even allowing for the increased wind speeds.

Hmm, it was a tad cold last night, certainly more so than had been forecast, almost -5 according to the back door thermometer. The bird baths had a 1cm ice cover on. It all looked very pretty with a thick white coating over everything but as the temperature suddenly rose at abut 9am the murk started to appear together with some attempts at drizzle, but now the sun is beginning to appear fitfully and should improve as the day goes on.

Pretty widespread fog is forecast for tonight. Tomorrow looks likely to be the coldest day so far this winter. Looking further ahead, the stagnant situation seems likely to shift with reversion to a more westerly type that should bring temps back to the mid-November/mid-March type maxima of about 10 C by Thursday. At the moment it's still too soon to predict Xmas.
I am getting a lot of pain in my left wrist at the moment, making typing very uncomfortable and me keep on hitting wrong keys. The right hand is occasionally affected too, ruling out playing the piano. Exercise doesn't seem to help. The only "cure" seems to be rubbing in Deeo Heat Max Strength, containing methyl salicate and menthol, enveloping me and the surrounding air space with powerful eye-watering fumes which, fortunately, smell quite pleasant, if rather overpowering.

Glorious winter day here today, wall to wall sunshine from about 10 AM. Got out for a brisk ( well not terribly brisk ! ) run this morning, which was pleasant, if a bit damp underfoot in the off road bits.I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
I am not a number, I am a free man.
