If we had a frost it was an airfrost I think, some roofs looked suspiciously sparkly but the grass was just very wet. After a very chilly start it's been a glorious sunny day, and I was able to shed a layer during this morning's (last until who knows when)volunteer garden session. I did spare a thought for the Tuesday trio who had constant rain to contend with instead - not a nice way to end the season poor souls.

Quite cold this morning! The curtains were pushed back and yes! The first fog of November! MrsBBM, quite rightly says, probably freezing fog, as it was rather cold last night, to say the least, as we went out for the last time for four weeks!

Quite a discrepancy between the Met and Beeb local forecasts, but looking at the map gives some clue. To the west the rain has cleared and nothing imminent, but to the east it is arriving, and I'm right in the middle between the two. There is some highish murk going over but I don't think it'll come to anything or if it does it won't be for long. Chilly but the lack of wind offsets the lack of sun in terms of feeling cold outside.

Cold start but now 10C - clear skies, bright sunshine - time to clean windows before coffee at 11.00am!

Ditto here in Wilts. Washing hanging out. I'm going for coffee without window cleaning.

Thanks for the reminder on this, me being the fall guy charged with organising window cleaning for the entire block of 14 flats and maisonettes. I shall have to find out if our regular team of operants are operating at this time.

No frost here this morning unlike yesterday - minimum of 3 C - but fog instead, which got thicker and thicker during the first half of morning before quite suddenly dispersing around 11, since when it's been calm and sunny, maxing out at 9 C, a couple below early November average, though with milder conditions anticipated tomorrow, and almost back to summer Saturday and Sunday as cT air arrives from Spain ahead of the next weather switch.

Speaking of which, I noticed an extraordinary irridescent effect on the living room carpet yesterday, and, wondering where it could possibly be coming from, lay down on the spot, to discover it was the result of sunlight shafting through the transparent rim of my flat screen TV!

There was a fascinating programme on BBC4 last evening, asking the question, does visual impairment impair the quality of art produced by artists with it? Aside from the interesting fact that artists such as Degas and Monet suffered from poor eyesight in their later years, which I had not previously known, the programme made the supposedly scientific assertion that, far from residing in objects, colour is in fact created by our brains. To "prove" this they showed a black and white copy of a coloured painting - or rather one as seen through a green filter, and then, placing a red filter in front of it, the "actual" colour scheme was restored. I have to say that there is no way my slow brain was responsible for the colours becoming the correct ones; it just wouldn't have had enough time to process them in the instant of switch. And in any case, my brain is left wing, which means it cannot possibly be in agreement with anyone else's.

There is a bit of mist lingering and looking rather decorative in the brilliant sunshine which is also making the colourful tree leaves glow. No mistaking that there was a frost overnight - slightly crunchy grass and the water in the bird bath at that interesting 'Slush Puppy' stage where early bathers have broken up a frozen skin but it hasn't yet got 'warm' enough to go fully liquid. I'm glad I picked cosmos and nasturtiums yesterday as I imagine they may well have been clobbered. Both struggled during the summer but have come into their own during the autumn and provided many small vases of pleasure indoors and forage for late insects outside.

Strange a difference a day makes! Clear today. Blue skies, with some cloud.
