Another day of broken promises. I'll have to get the hose on to my veg patch tomorrow after work.

Thunderstorms can be like that: one place under floods, a short distance away no rain whatsoever. I was once stuck outside a pub at closing time, waiting for half an hour for a thunderstorm to clear. When the rain eventually stopped, I cycled off down the road, only to discover 200 metres down the road it was completely dry!

It just goes to show how 'local' weather can be. Our garden got well watered yesterday - we had 3.3 mm of rain during the afternoon - whereas, while out walking on Friday afternoon, I watched what looked like a pretty hefty shower heading out to sea just a few miles north of us.

There were two blanket waves of rain cloud went across, but each had a small rent, parallel to the line of travel - and guess where I was in relation to that gap... At one point during the afternoon there was a token grumble of thunder, some black clouds and a brief light shower courtesy of the edge of the first gap. During the night there must have been a little more rain, but a brisk breeze has made sure there's little left now. Due to be dry, warm and breezy today so watering duties definitely on this evening. Heigh ho. On the plus side it will make things easier at work - we are doing pre-booked timed visitor entries and there is no undercover space available under the corona control regime for those waiting to come in.

Yesterday, yes, the rain and the wind, were quite bad. Howling against the walls! Hoping a more gentler day today?

Just checked. We had 21.6 mm yesterday, making it one of the wettest days over the last couple of months. Quite pleasant on bike just now to fetch Sunday paper. High white cloud and some sunny bits. Followed orders and wore a mask for the the first time. Fair enough but my glasses steamed up. One other customer was wearing one, one wasn't.

A "mainly dry" day was forecast for this part of the world, but at noon I went out to put the laundry on the line, and couldn't help but notice the heights being reached by cumulus clouds, which of course, had very dark bases. And now, guess what, a heavy enough shower is crossing central London to obliterate the view of the Hampstead Heath ridge. So, it's a briefish walk this afternoon, dependent on weather, and stay in all day tomorrow, by the look of it. All but Scotland should dry up after that, and it might even get up towards the hot mark by Friday, at least on the eastern side of the country - for the first time this month.

In case nobody saw the news about the tornado which hit Northampton yesterday, here is some remarkable youtube footage of the event, seen from about a mile away. We don't often manage to catch events of this kind in this country, so it was brilliant that someone was on hand to capture this one. Pictures in the local press show allotments completely devastated, everything haphazardly piled up as if by several bulldozers operating together. Nobody was apparently injured, but there was reportage of a number of houses having their roofs wrecked.

Someone has posted stunning pictures of storm clouds on the website below, taken near The Solent last night, towards sunset:
