Cold? I discovered fleece lined thermal trousers last year. Brilliant invention! Have now ordered another two pairs. Roll on winter!

At nearly 72 I now find my external temperature comfort zone dwindling to about 5 degrees Celsius, and for the first time in my life am seriously thinking of acquiring an electric blanket. Where, retail-wise (as opposed to online) does one get one - anybody know?

I bought one for an elderly friend years ago at John Bell and Croyden: http://www.johnbellcroyden.co.uk/
Actually, I have still go my mother's but never use it. Still prefer a hot water bottle. Time to grow up?

PS. Re hot water bottle. Make absolutely sure it's ok for "boiling water" (make "flashy" made in Germany, where else?). Have had one unfortunate accident with a Dunlop made hot water bottle. You have been warned!

MrsBBM refuses to put the heating, even though I was feeling cold!

Had to force myself out of the house yesterday and couldn't do so until 2.40pm.

I have pretty much acquired a preference in local orientation for due east. One of its main benefits is the comparative absence of roads and housing. Also, this was one of the walks I hadn't ever done before. Up the chalk path past the blazing fire and the horses, across the aerodrome and down steeply on the other side through the common with its docile cows to Whyteleafe roundabout. That bit of no more than ten minutes is all civilians and hence rather wild but cross the road and jump on a train at Upper Warlingham (which is not Upper Warlingham) and it's just five minutes to Woldingham. There to the garden centre, a look at the sheep on nearby fields as well as the plants and then back, unfortunately with school kids, after which with a couple of light bags of seeds the walk up again. My gawd, if I thought our hill was steep - and it is one of the steepest in London - that is more steep. Like a mini mountain but it was ok and once up on the aerodrome again I just felt the sea. It's that sense of expanse with a big sky above and a horizon. The few dog walkers said it was very windy, if beautifully sunny. No, it was blustery to the point of bracing. Yes, bracing. A more English and old fashioned word associated mainly with the coast one couldn't find and it was spot on. I could - and will - spend hours there looking at the direction of the tides. But today, planting. The sun has at least been the equivalent to other elements such as the rain.

Watched Michael Collins, once of market traders and the Old Kent Road, in the early hours on BBC4. A repeat of the programme on the suburban garden and while his style isn't overly likable, the content was great and as he's the grandson of my Nan's mate I am for him. Maud would have been proud of Mr Unjolly on TV; Vic could never have understood the internet.

Journalist Michael Collins strolls around the suburban garden and explores its history.

(Chemistry - no - but it is quite possible that in his writing (the books and to some extent TV) he has tapped into truths with which I identify more than any other writer of my age)

A nice weather day. Never got to my kayaking - a lack of confidence and all round gloom and doom. If it doesn't happen next week, the free vouchers are lost. It will be a test of the meaning of money to me. Sat with my Mum and Dad in their garden. Mainly blue skies but we all spoke about the clouds. They don't get my silent listening, not that I have any choice in the matter or to take it further a lack of conversation based on non Ovalteeny appraisals of the present day. They get the hump over it while keeping their cool and talking as best they can about neighbours as family which in truth they are to them and how very lucky. Finally, tonight, I did another on the bucket list. Would I shave to show I am not growing a beard beforehand? No, because my skin is ultra sensitive and to everyone else I'm invisible. People talk about taking a torch. I didn't but accept they have a point. Going up to the preferred if typically unpredictable "local" on one's own on a night without big moon is, I confess, a challenge. Remember it's six steps on the concrete part of the path first. Know your feet before the gap in the light created by would-be developers, then it's pitch black under trees that come at you in the face and reminders by fences on the right you haven't quite got your bearings. A trench underfoot that your brain has to be friends with, being blind. "We" think here of the great things that the society against the invasion of light does.

The reward beyond the woods is worth it. My silhouetted horses. I'm in love. Then a tricky little dark extra bit. I'm not a woman so I am happier to do these things. I'd rather go at the knife of a loon there than in a housing estate. 15-20 minutes in all. The Sunday quiz. Yep, joint last and what an achievement. The questions were not on my wavelength at all but then nothing is which is why I am there rather than with radio, television and people. See, it was all netball and the soaps and god knows what and all of the other teams had four to six beings as called. I got 25. The winners got 41. I believe that says it all. I spoke to the quizmaster, to one decent bloke who was in a relationship with his mobile,to the bar staff and to four dear very old ladies who came joint last with me. I'm going back next time to be on their team. It's not that they are dear old ladies. It's because they all survived the blitz. Consequently, after three pints it was a doddle getting back. Mostly what I love - it gives me reassurance - is that I can do things to prove to myself we're in the country.

                  I'm 54.

Just a foreword to the effect that the first real signs of autumn kick in on Saturday night with a very windy low, incorporating remnants of Hurricane Maria, (yes - that one) swinging in from the lower left. Quite a lot of rain to come too, it seems.

What is a tad troubling is that oop 'ere, the water tables are pretty high already, we have had a lot of rain anyway, so that......."are we back to 'Desmond'?" is what everyone here is saying.

Right now, the wind is getting nasty, the fells have disappeared in thick mist and rain, it is a yukky, warmish whiteout. And coming east pretty quickly, i'd say.

Still dry here as I prepare to meet up with old friends for a drink in a pub 3 miles away. The question is about the return journey - can I fit my folded cycle cape into one of my pockets?

Yellow weather warning (wind) issued for York tomorrow, I see.
I've been saving up some online editing work to do, so, provided the power remains on, that's what I'll be busy with tomorrow.
But NOT with Radio 3 on as background music!
