There was mention of rain, but the forecast likelihood has now been reduced, and certainly the only likely clouds are belting across at height and speed. The weather map shows quite a few blue patches, but that patchiness means the chances of missing them are high. I've put out some washing and will shortly go and do some shopping - sans waterproof - to try and provoke precipitation...I am not hopeful, and am resigned to another evening watering round.

Today, wall-to-wall sunshine once more, with very deep shadows like you get in hotter climes, and the midday temperature reaching 19.5 C - so, given clear skies all the way and lighter winds, I would think yesterday's 22 C will easily be broken.

The sun got out properly just after lunch and the temperature shot up - 26 on my 'shade' thermometer - so it was a warm walk to the shops. New growth on the perennials in the borders is looking distinctly droopy; it will perk up overnight but then flop again unless we get some decent sustained rain. The roses are coming out in a rush, with intense colours and perfumes, but the combination of sun and breeze is making them go over rather quickly.

According to the BBC, the temperature today reached 26 degs C in central London, and 25 C wherever the recording station is, here in SE19. I was still out sunbathing at 6.30, which is unprecedented this early in the season. My own north wall sited thermometer gave me a max of 23 C, but surrounded by trees and large shrubs, we are in a relatively sheltered position here. But still, these readings are a couple of degrees higher than was forecast, so if the 27 C predicted in parts of central London tomorrow are again exceeded, this could give a 28 C or 29 C somewhere, which although not quite record-breaking would be pretty hot for May.

Perfect clear blue skies here in North London, was already very warm on my morning walk at 9. Don’t fancy the inevitable crowds out later so will watch the rest of it largely indoors, not even in the garden, given the restless neighbours, one side effect of the Ongoing I could live without. But this weather is very heartening indeed and long may it continue.
