Jorge just arrived here.... rains sideways, wind and rain drove me back from my attempted walk....(filled the bird feeders first so missed out...)

Jus a thought, but these storms are supposed to get their names in alphabetical order, aren't they? So it was C for Chiara, then D for Dennis, so what happened to Eric, Freda, Gertrude etc then?

'Our' next storm will be Ellen. The Spanish got in first and named Jorge since it was also going to impact Iberia. Storm naming here is shared between Met Eireann and the Met Office.

A sunny dry day today and, although breezy, not as cold as recently. A good stint of gardening and a chance to appreciate some of the more positive things that are happening away from the news!

Snow flurries very early up here, now bright sun, fast cloud, and above all an accelerating ICY westerly.
It has been the WIND that has scoured and cut so relentlessly over the past month that most talk about here. .

Quite possibly BBM - there are some nice big puffy cumulus clouds building up, now that the spring sun is powerful enough to generate unforced convection inland, and not just have it blown in from off the warmer seas. We have now reached the time of year when, with very cold air aloft in unstable polar airstreams, snow can penetrate to sea level in heavy showers, bringing surface temperatures tumbling dramatically in a matter of seconds.

I've read that eskimoes have 50 words for snow. Given their everyday familiarity with snow this seems not surprising; however, there are many many different types of frozen precipitation found at our latitude, of which true hail - hard pellets formed when large raindrops are repeatedly whooshed up into the frozen upper reaches of cumulonimbus clouds, acquiring new layers of ice each time before being heavy enough to fall through any updraughts; and soft hail - small pellets formed when rain drops fall through a supercooled layer at lower levels. There are also snow crystals - the original form, snow flakes - where snow crystals cling together into aggregates; ice pellets - basically frozen drizzle; and varying combinations of some or all of these in what for easy convenience is classified under the catch-all term sleet.

Yes, Monday was a treat after the dark, wet days last week. Begins to feel like proper springtime as the light strengthens and the blossom opens.

Overnight frost on meadow already gone; still chilly, but cloudless bright blue sky here, and sun streaming into the house.

Cloudy here, but it's benign grey roller coloud (stratocumulus), so I'm hoping the predicted showers, if any, are light, as I have to bike my way over to Brixton this afternoon.

Three hours later: funnily enough it started showering gently as I was making my way there, and now we have some more substantial showers coming over, some with soft hail.
