Well I didn't get rained on walking to my meetings - just half inch of hailstones quickly followed by rather more of snow. A lot of it had cleared by the time I had to walk back, but with the temperature dropping fast if there's a frost things could be difficult for morning travellers as there is a lot of wetness lying around.

A bright day and dry, but rather draughty which made the volunteer gardening a chilly undertaking this morning, even in the sun. In parts the soil was still frozen at midday, so all in all the work that got done was dictated by where was in the sun and not frozen. It was heartening to see that Storm Chiara hadn't caused problems, although the clear-out by the wind of (mostly small) dead twigs from the trees on site has made a mess that'll need clearing before opening to the public. No doubt birds will be able to make use of some of it for nest building.

Jeremy Bowen, the famous BBC TV war reporter, was at my dental surgery this morning! I asked him if it was his regular dentist - "No", he said, "at least, not regular enough!" Tempted as I was to say, "understandable in your case" I thought the better of it and didn't reply. A neighbour has just told me he's often to be seen jogging in Crystal Palace Park.

As with last weekend, a beautiful spring-like day for an enjoyable morning ride down to Brixton greets the oncoming weekend turmoil: still now nearly 11C, warm sunshine albeit veiled, and just a gentle south southwesterly. The main worries are for prolonged heavy rain from Saturday night through to Monday morning accompanied by force 8-9 gales, and this in the south-east for a change! The parent depression leading to all this is predicted, at 921 millibars in the centre, just south of Iceland on Sunday, to be one of the deepest Atlantic lows on record - the lowest apparently having been 914 mb at the centre!
In case anybody's wondering, tropical hurricanes or typhoons have been know to go a lot deeper than that!
