Well I didn't get rained on walking to my meetings - just half inch of hailstones quickly followed by rather more of snow. A lot of it had cleared by the time I had to walk back, but with the temperature dropping fast if there's a frost things could be difficult for morning travellers as there is a lot of wetness lying around.

Glad everyone is ok after Sunday’s maelstrom of a day!

A lovely sunny day is to eschew!

Well, up here in my part of the North West last night was far and away the wildest of Ciara so far.
All the more surprising - and even, dare I say it, scary given that little or no mention of such an upgrade on any official forecast.

We had a slight sleety shower around lunchtime yesterday. Today, I hope going to be ok.

A lovely morning here and should be a good day - but forecast heavy rain this evening.

A bright day and dry, but rather draughty which made the volunteer gardening a chilly undertaking this morning, even in the sun. In parts the soil was still frozen at midday, so all in all the work that got done was dictated by where was in the sun and not frozen. It was heartening to see that Storm Chiara hadn't caused problems, although the clear-out by the wind of (mostly small) dead twigs from the trees on site has made a mess that'll need clearing before opening to the public. No doubt birds will be able to make use of some of it for nest building.

Lots of broken branches in this neighbourhood - mostly medium-sized, most of the large ones ready to break off having come down in the autumn storms when trees were still leaf-laden. Tomorrow looks pretty wet everywhere, but for the next big blow we await Saturday and Sunday as Storm Dennis passes by to the NW with a central pressure expected to be 921 mb!!! Not a record depth, but very deep all the same. Winds however aren't expected to be quite as strong anywhere as last weekend's - the pressure gradient not being as tight: it's heavy rainfall they're worrying about this time, particularly for Wales, the S and SW.

Jeremy Bowen, the famous BBC TV war reporter, was at my dental surgery this morning! I asked him if it was his regular dentist - "No", he said, "at least, not regular enough!" Tempted as I was to say, "understandable in your case" I thought the better of it and didn't reply. A neighbour has just told me he's often to be seen jogging in Crystal Palace Park.

Rather strong winds last night. The Met Office says there’ll be strong winds today with thunder and hail, thrown in! Lovely.

Cold, dark, windy and wet just now...weather to explore the Mariana Trench...will do my best to avoid street-level Southampton for the moment. Dog is having a lazy time with her London family.

As with last weekend, a beautiful spring-like day for an enjoyable morning ride down to Brixton greets the oncoming weekend turmoil: still now nearly 11C, warm sunshine albeit veiled, and just a gentle south southwesterly. The main worries are for prolonged heavy rain from Saturday night through to Monday morning accompanied by force 8-9 gales, and this in the south-east for a change! The parent depression leading to all this is predicted, at 921 millibars in the centre, just south of Iceland on Sunday, to be one of the deepest Atlantic lows on record - the lowest apparently having been 914 mb at the centre!

In case anybody's wondering, tropical hurricanes or typhoons have been know to go a lot deeper than that!

Storm Dennis will be the last in this series of lows generated by the soutward diversion of the Atlantic jet; that pattern now having been broken by the jet's re-location further north to follow a more "normal" eastward track across the central States as opposed to Miami. The actual jet remains pretty strong however, meaning windy westerlies will continue to predominate, but the "Azores high" is expected to shift its position northwards by Wednesday so as to be centred mid north Atlantic to the west of Portugal, throwing a ridge north-east into France, which should calm things down a bit and at the same time divert passing frontal systems further to our north. Temperatures look to stay a few degrees above the late February means till the end of the month - no signs of cold outbreaks appearing as yet on the horizon!

The first Dennis rumble has washed through and now we sit braced for Dennis Pt 2. Can see it now on the near felltops, and horizon.
