Heavy rain here with a flooded lane by our house as Suffolk Council no longer bothers to dig out and maintain ditches leaving those of us closest to the nuisance to do it ourselves or risk flooding buildings.

Absolutely vile day here and glad I'm off work so stayed warm indoors and haven't gone anywhere. It's been lashing down with rain all day, there's a strong wind and sleet is forecast for this evening.

Tomorrow's racing at Cheltenham has been abandoned due to waterlogging.

A brief break at about 2pm enabled me to get out for some shopping; there was a bit of drizzle but the sun managed to show its face briefly. Perishing cold though.

There've been reports of snow on Dartmoor, the Brecon Beacons, and even at Weston-Super-Mare and Bristol, at low levels. Here it's been as I expected - big shower clouds running inland from the Channel, but at 7C max too cold further inland for any to form, although some nice tall cumulus has been forming. Simple ground-based convection is not enough at such temperatures, which is why whereas a weather situation such as this would guarantee showers and thunderstorms in summer, in winter you need additional "forcing mechanisms", ie winds blowing in off the sea sufficiently strongly to carry marine-originated showers inland before they peter out - which may happen this evening; converging surface winds which are forced upwards where meeting; or some kind of frontal structure not dependent on surface temperatures for convection to occur.

No, it's God in this particular instance. Oh, I forgot, they're the same thing!

Only just up the road too! Hope we don’t get anymore today! I think I’ve a cold coming, so I’ll be having a glass of whisky tonight!
