How do you know there was thunder, or did you just assume it would follow the flashes?

Hmm. Hurricanes undergo a lot of sex changes after they join up with the North Atlantic jet stream, and arrive looking much the same as our usual deep depressions - maybe with rather more moisture in them than otherwise, but that just makes for a bit more rainfall. Anyway, they were right about today's thunder, as it was doing that over central London just after the Supreme Court's historic announcement. I asked the gardener what he would tell his little daughter he was doing at the time, to which he laconically answered, "clearing out all the dead wood here"!

The cold front passed over at precisely midday here with a short burst of rain at the tail-end of dramatic banks of retreating clouds on different levels, nearly clear sky beyond to the north-west, and an instantaneous change to the feel of the air from stifling to refreshing. Oh, and a drop of a couple of degrees.

The weekend's weather looks absolutely dreadful, I'm afraid.

It's clouding up now, but we've had several hours of sunshine and noticeable warmth despite the wind. The weekend weather is a bit of a worry as we've an outdoor based event on Sunday. Rain discourages visitors and wind makes for worries for staff, so the prospect of both together isn't welcome.

                      Mighty overnight rain.
Strong winds, and today serious, non-stop rain with little end in sight.

It is now [1.42 p.m.] HAMMERING it down up here. Ground floor starting to well from underneath with water. Rarely have I seen / heard on roof such intensity of rain like this in this area.

Looks at the mo like next Weds and Thurs will be fine, but we'll be in cold air by then.

It’s been quite a long spell. I’ve not been able to get any fresh air, although I’ve been taken out in the evenings to other places. Not really the same though.

Off to Leeds later (Giulio Cesare/Opera North): train this time, as it will finish after the last bus back to York leaves. Not looking forward to getting drenched! Managed to get to the doctors' surgery and back for my flu jab earlier this morning before the heavens opened yet again!

Very changeable, today and yesterday; spells of rain and sun in equal part, the only near-constant being the wind.

That's why I've just stopped eating radishes!
