The thunderstorm is rolling over the White Cliffs of Dover.

No wonder it felt hot in Cambridge today, it was 100 F

I remember a few years ago I was watching the weather forecast with the subtitles on. I was a bit alarmed to read that most of Lincolnshire was shrouded in a dangerous dog.

Thunderstorm has been and gone - pretty spectacular - and it's still raining, but nowhere near as hard. Surprisingly, our TV viewing was not affected, although we have in the past regularly ended up watching the 'bad or no signal' message during periods of heavy rain.

I believe that was a new UK record - though with all the heat in Westminster, it's difficult to remember what was said on last night's news.

Unbearably hot yesterday in the room I use for work in Winchester - even with windows open and fans going.

Depends weather you are a meteorologist or an ornithologist!

Astonishing lightshow here last night between about 10pm and 11pm. I watched for about 40 mins - probably didn't do my eyes much good with some of the flashes, but the main and brightest focus was conveniently screened by a tree in a neighbouring garden - and the thing that most struck me was the lack of noise. There was a bit of thunder grumble, but no lightning cracks, even with the few 'normal' sky to earth flashes. Mostly it seemed to be balls, sheets, and horizontal flashes, and a few which seemed to go up from ground level.
Impossible to get more than a couple of hours sleep as the desultory and short-lived rain added stickiness to the high temperature and over-charged atmosphere.

It's a record for July. The all-time UK record high temperature is 38.5, recorded in Faversham a few years ago.

Not much thunder last at all here! Still humid today though, despite a good breeze. I think we need a good thunderstorm!!!

If you didn't get one of the passing ones this morning they must have by-passed you to the east, BBM. The frontal system responsible is set to hang around all day tomorrow and Sunday, re-exerting its potential for producing more heavy rain. How it's going to be possible for me to make my way to the big event taking place in Sutton tomorrow afternoon and evening to commemorate John Hiseman, with appearances including Colin Bluntstone's The Zombies, is causing me some anxiety, what with the trains on what is habitually an unreliable line left all over the place following yesterday's strains on the network, and me not prepared to face the alternative of either a two-hour bus journey, or an hour and a half on the bike through heavy rain! At least my £25 will go to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

On the drive back via M25, my car thermometer peaked at 38.5 C , unless I missed a 39 .

It’ll be soon enough back to normal, whatever that is.

The RAH won’t be much fun tonight temperature wise though, I guess.
                                From a Guardian article today
The Met Office said a new record temperature for the month was set at 38.1C in Cambridge on Thursday afternoon, beating the previous record of 36.7C set in Heathrow in 2015.
