Awake during the night because of loud thunder, now I'm awake early anyway... with a blocked ear as well.

Awake? I've hardly been asleep for the heavy air..... what is night and what is day? Pity the storm here was so unspectacular though...
Hope the ear opens up soon J....miserable affliction for the musical...

Apparently lightning was flashing every few seconds here. Only the loud bang of thunder woke me up, but only momentarily.

Yes, some ear drops made light work of my ear.

So should we drink tea until the sweat drips on the ground?

Yup - moved on up to the Pennines 90 minutes later: noisey, spectacular, chucking it down for about an hour - and then sweet, cool air.

Yup, here c2.30 a.m., spectacular more or less non-stop lightning, rumbled a bit, lots of hard rain, then gone in 40 minutes!

Seen from around 8 miles to the south, last night's thunderstorms over N and NW London provided a beautiful show, which I watched from a north-facing window. We missed all but a brief burst of moderate rain, just after midnight. Today has turned out a couple of degrees up on yesterday - 31C, now 29C - but it was forecast yesterday to be cooler! This may be the reason why they've upped possible maxima to 39C for tomorrow, which if reached will be the national all-time record. I recall 38C in Hanover in the early 1970s, with a strong southerly breeze, and it feeling like standing in front of a gigantic fan heater. So I made the most of today to collect my regular drugs standing order from the chemist, returned home at a leisurely walking pace, to find the white cotton short-sleeved shirt I have on soaked through!

To allay heat emitting from the boiler cupboard, I switched off yesterday morning and went over to the immersion heater - which started making weird alarming clunking noises after being on for a couple of hours. The resultant water cannot have been far from boiling - considerably hotter than that provided by my gas boiler - and it is still nearly hot 24 hours and several dish washes later after switching off. And with windows shut and curtains drawn the flat is still comfortably on the cool side at 21C.

The issuing of a yellow warning for possible severe storms from 3pm onwards tomorrow, if realised, would cap any further rise in temperature at about the time it would be expected to peak. But anyway, I for one shan't be going anywhere tomorrow.

The wind became tumbledrier like early afternoon which caused a sudden temperature spike and necessitated a closing of the windows. Yesterday it was hot in the sun but the breeze in the shade was pleasant and was useful for ventilation and cooling in the house.
The storm and bit of rain overnight freshened things up somewhat but as the temperature rose it became sticky for a while until all the moisture had been sucked up.
Forecast suggests max of 35C tomorrow, so I'm glad I'm not at work.
SA I would expect your immersion to have a thermostat on it?

We had a thunderstorm night before last. Had no effect yesterday, mind.

Today 35C!!! Thunderstorm likely quite soon I reckon.

According to Ukweatherworld, the July temperature record was broken at Heathrow a couple of hours ago; but it was under 38C, and I have my doubts about the 39C the BBC was warning of now happening, as elevated convection has now spread up from the south, bringing cloudy skies to the areas most likely to have been the hottest, and even a moderate shower here half an hour ago, which noticeably raised humidity levels while lowering the temperature. Fascinating lumpy sky, altocumulus at around 8000 feet towering up into high-based cumulonimbus - more like something that would be seen over the Serengetti during the rainy season than here normally. The incoming cold front, which is expected to cross all areas but the extreme east of East Anglia, Lincolnshire to Northumbria and Scotland, will cool things off, though it will still be warm by usual standards. Unfortunately it also looks as it it will stick around until Sunday, bringing lots of rain, and spoil my weekend.

The local reporting station recorded 36C at 3pm today, and my thermometer peaked at 38C(in the shade in the back yard) and is now around 35C. The wind has been doing the tumble drier again in the afternoon which adds to the unpleasantness. Tomorrow should be a bit cooler - but still very hot. The sky is somewhat hazy but no clouds.

I was in Cambridge today, and it was boiling. Went in to town on the park and fried.

On the drive back via M25, my car thermometer peaked at 38.5 C , unless I missed a 39 .

It’ll be soon enough back to normal, whatever that is.

The RAH won’t be much fun tonight temperature wise though, I guess.

That area of E Anglia was quite possibly one of the hotspots today. Here it peaked at 34; once it dropped a bit I went out and did some rose pruning. One of our bush roses that normally goes berserk by this time of the year, with branches taking over half a medium-sized shrub border, has staged a sudden halt in the past week, leaving buds either not flowering or only half coming out. Not sure why this should be the case, given that the plant is still living, and I have now pruned it back to two shoots or nodal points from the base, to see what happens. This rose produces clusters of sweet-scented dull yellow blooms and it would be a shame to dig it up. Might ask the gardener if he has any of that nasty rose feed liquid to use on it as an emergency.

Edit: Loud thunder booms coming from south-west of us, over Sutton way - 8 miles away! Very dramatic elevated thunder clouds like something painted by Dali looming up from the south here.

Temperature outside, 32 C. That inside, downstairs (all windows shut and curtains drawn all day), 27C. Upstairs, 30 C. No air conditioning or fans bar the shower room extractor fan (currently on ‘permanently’.
