26C, unbroken blue sky here; far too hot to go cycling at present!

Update: 28C now (so the weather widget on my iPad tells me).

The grounds of Osborne House are lovely. I hope you both enjoy your visit. Not sure if you have been there before but they have a vehicle that takes you right to the water. It is well worth getting and the wait for it isn't very long. A slight breeze but otherwise very still here today. Almost uncanny. I booked my glider flights this morning. Thought this might be a good week but they said they couldn't fit me in this week or next so the day that has been chosen means it is pot luck with the weather. It wouldn't surprise me if there are several postponements. I'm not good with long nervy waits. In the meantime, I've been invited by the Chair of the local residents to join a historical walk of the airfield on the 6th August. I hadn't realized she was so bold. Either I will be there feeling all smug as if I've just flown Concorde or gnashing my teeth about what hasn't happened. I've paid so I can't duck out.

Absolutely lovely here today - longish cycle ride this morn, taking in our nearest last vestige of genuine countryside, Streatham Common, and Tescos, Brixton. Fantastic air quality, with clear views from Norwood Grove House (Bessemer's gaff apparently) as far as the eye could see. I'm putting my money on tropical-style thunderstorms breaking out here on Wednesday morning, and probably risking my reputation for... accurate predictability.

              ... o, you're just cribbin' the Met: Office -

              "Met Office Warnings Issued For:
              Greater London

              Yellow warning of rain

              From:
              0005 on Wed 19 July

Scattered thunderstorms with locally intense downpours will continue to move north across England and Wales in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Although the thunderstorms may tend to ease from the south later in the night, further, possibly severe storms may break out again on Wednesday afternoon. These appear more likely across central and eastern parts of England.

Although many places will miss the thunderstorms, there is a chance of some localised flooding of homes, businesses and roads.Frequent lightning may be an additional hazard with potential for disruption to power networks. Large hail may be an additional hazard on Wednesday afternoon.

                .

Those sorts of warnings are just the Met Office covering their backsides in the wake of Mike Fish's infamous howler of October 1987, and they go out every time there's a Spanish Plume-style breakdown such as the one predicted. Just looking at the forecast synoptics gives me the strong feeling that everything is likely to come together for a major thunderstorm event on Wednesday, kicking off late morning here in the south, from the coast to London, and then extending northwards to affect the Midlands early afternoon and the north and borderlands from teatime onwards.

Well, on my schedule here it says 19C, but I'd take several bets it's more than that - 23 maybe. Fabulous summer day here.

Hope you get your glider flights soon, Lat! It was lovely at Osborne House, yesterday. MrsBbm pushed all the way to the Swiss Cottage . Lovely building that. Then had lunch in the restaurant there. Rather slow service as they had a private function on! Rather silly really. Won't be using that again. A very hot day but the house was well worth seeing. The staff were very good to us. Had a lift up to the first floor but not the second. A great day , despite the heat!

A rather windy but warm day. Going to a pub in Seaview, to for lunch!

Getting quite wind and cloudy here, expecting rain this afternoon, quite a drop or two probably!

There's already been some thunder down your way, cloughie, and more is to come. This lot is expected to reach the London area around 10 o'clock tonight - a shame as I'd been intending to go to an open air experimental music event near Waterloo station, and was looking forward to the bike ride there and back - but I'm now realising I may have overplayed my hand somewhat yesterday in predicting "tropical style" storms for tomorrow. Perhaps up north.

I am pleased that you enjoyed it bbm. Seaview - another one I had to look at on the map. It is making me question where I have been now. Probably as far as the coast is concerned from Bembridge around to somewhere between Yarmouth and Cowes whereas Seaview appears to be east of Ryde, a town I think I know but obviously not the parts just outside.

Sunny and hot here with breezes. Most local humans appear to be just about to go on holiday or especially stroppy. I'm told we have a lot of butterflies this year but haven't seen them.

Still a warm breeze and some sun but no rain as yet - a little is forecast for this evening.

Lovely day in the Pennines/Dales, too - not as uncomfortably sticky as a few weeks ago. Remember this time last week - chucking it down so much there was a chap up the street building an ark.

Driving between Pateley Bridge and Grassington, listening to Ben Frith & chums playing the Tippett Piano Concerto - that gorgeous Slow Movement" Spun gold against the backdrop of those hills!
