It's 31 in the shade here at the back of the house, and the paving slabs are way too hot to walk on without protection, as I've just discovered when going out barefoot to get some tomatoes for my lunch! Reinforces what has been mentioned forcibly in the local press re dogs and hot weather. Vets have been seeing a lot of sore paws, some burnt, as owners haven't thought about their pets' welfare when doing walkies. As one person said - stand on the pavement in your bare feet - if it's too hot for you then don't force it on your dog. The sky is a bit hazy, so masking the full effect for now....

In ten days' time we have to go to Derbyshire. Will we cope???

hmmm. For 11 and 12 August 18 degrees and rain all day ain't my idea of summer fun!

Rarely has a year gone by when a pair of Hush Puppies hasn’t graced my shoe-rack!
Gobsmacked to discover they are American. Fake news?
"The Hush Puppies brand was founded in 1958 following extensive work by Wolverine to develop a practical method of pigskin tanning for the US military. (Pigskin is considered one of the most durable leathers and the government was interested in its use in gloves and other protective materials for soldiers.) Chairman Victor Krause developed the concept of a "casual" pigskin shoe to appeal to the then-growing post-war suburbia in the United States. The brand became instantly recognizable as a leisure casual staple of late 1950s and 1960s American life.
The Hush Puppies Dog Logo is a highly recognized symbol for footwear around the world. The Hush Puppies name evolved from a trip into Tennessee by Jim Muir, the Company's Sales Manager. Upon finishing his fried fish dinner at the home of a customer, he asked why the little fried corn dough balls were called "Hush Puppies." The customer replied that, "the fried dough was used by farmers to quiet their barking dogs." Muir reasoned that "Hush Puppies" would be an excellent name for Wolverine's new comfortable casual pigskin shoes because when feet hurt they are much like barking dogs. A brand was born.
Hush Puppies claimed their rubber soles saved the life of Roling Stones guitarist Keith Richards when he accidentally touched his guitar against an ungrounded microphone at a 1965 concert in Sacramento, California. Richards was knocked unconscious, but medics believed that the crepe-soled Hush Puppies shoes he was wearing insulated him and saved his life... "

29 C. - no higher than before, but with added humidity and little air movement making it feel stifling today: just the weather for a puncture; and when I checked, some so-and-so had nicked one of the nuts securing my rear wheel, can you believe it?? How long I'd been cycling with the wheel only half secured I've no idea - fortunately the local cycle retailer sells them in singles, for, wait for it, 80p!!!
Dental appointment tomorrow - hopefully just for the 6 monthly check-up: the place isn't air-conditioned, and I don't think I could cope with having any treatment beyond the usual de-scale and polish.

Oh, and before I forget, yes, it does look as if it is turning rather thundery - high-base stuff, which I like the best as you can get to see long crawling ribbon lightning displays. Thank heavens, it all cools down tomorrow to something more like what we're accustomed to.
