What does bug me and I know this could be true of others is that the vague and over-frequently I fear less than accurate forrecasts for 'up here' by BBC etc fall sort of the observed and lived-in reality.

Yes, I do know that the geography up here can make some forecasting tricky, so I now get online weather reports from a NORWEGIAN forecasting service which the farmers in this area have come to use as being far more accurate than the BBC's SE-orientated service and thus essential for their job.

May I echo SA's sentiments? I greatly enjoy reading Draco's posts, not least as an antidote to the occasionally southern bias of this thread. And Vinteuil will no doubt get his just desserts, weather-wise, on his trip to ... the horror! the horror! ... Derbyshire.

I enjoy your reports from Up There - it comforts my sensibilities as a Southern Softie, in the same way as lying awake in a snug bed listening to the hurricanes reported in the Shipping Forecast ( the romance of Rockall - Bailey - North Utsire - Forties - Cromarty - and other Faroes ) ...

Like you I use a Norwegian forecaster as more reliable - yr.no - and recently have taken to watching https://www.ventusky.com - highly recommended..

The BBC weather forecasting has been outsourced to "Meteo" (Meteo something) as the Met office lost the contract. Myself - I use the forecast on the Met Office website (which is the same as that in their mobile app).

Surely all the services mentioned are accessing the same data from weather stations/sensors? I've always found the BBC website and radio forecasts too generalised to be of any use. I would have to concentrate on the TV forecast to know in detail what will happen when over the next 24 hours. I prefer the site (where there is also the Met office's own video forecast and also long term (6-30 days) forecast

(Also, if I am about to start gardening for example - in normal weather conditions (i.e. uncertain) I use the 3 hour rain forecast (works best on a computer, I find)). Sometimes it shows there is certain to be rain, or vice versa - at least I can be more informed about the chances :

The Beeb doesn't use the same reporting station for weather for my locality as does the Met - which actually makes it even more silly that the BBC version so often seems astray from reality as it is not only nearer to me, but also has fewer 'take into account differences' than the Met reporting station.

Looks like another hot day to come. Vints needn't worry. Up here in the Midlands it's been, if anything, an even better summer than down south. Derbyshire, next door to here, should be fine though it's forecast to cool down in the week.

Well, across the pond in Iowa the harvest looks very promising, the heat is not too oppressive and so far rainfall has been normal(ish).

But whether the Trumpish farmers will be able to sell their produce remains to be seen.

This weekend is a solemn one in Japan and worldwide. In Southampton my comrades will float paper boats with candles down the Itchen in commemoration of the events at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Lest we forget.

As it's forecast to be even hotter the next couple of days my plans to do a couple of outings will have to be put on hold, frustrating as it had already been difficult to find suitable slots. Temperatures much lower yesterday, a welcome respite, but when 22 feels cool it rather highlights just how hot it is otherwise!

Indeed, when the temperatures return to normal (as expected on Wednesday) it's going to be quite a cultural shock for the Jamaicans, Serbs, Brazilians, Gambians, Columbians, Greeks and Italians who live here in this block of flats!
