Market day and I've just been there on my bike. I judged the weather to be suitable for short-sleeves, shorts and sandals. This was perfectly OK as it happened, but it seemed to be both cool and warm at the same time and most people had opted for a jacket or pullover.

Last night the forecast suggested today would be markedly cooler than Tuesday(which was sticky, warm, and uncomfortable for any exertion), welcome news for my Wednesday gardening slot. Checked this morning and found it was to be warm, and in fact it turned out to be similar to Tuesday, so limited garden activity. This has happened several times recently where the evening forecast for the following day is markedly different from the morning version on the day itself.
Thursday forecast at present to be quite a bit cooler as the wind goes round, but we shall see. I'm more interested in the possibility of rain as watering is getting to be onerous and non-watered parts of the garden - which is most of it - are getting to look very sorry for themselves; it's shame when flowers go over too quickly and leaves start to look dull in these strong dry winds and (intermittent)high temperatures.

The weak cold front should be through where you are by now, as it was reported crossing Chester at 2 o'clock. No sign of pre-frontal skies here yet, the air is remarkably clear (excellent visibility), with just two-thirds medium-sized cumulus cloud coverage disappearing into stratocumulus infill, caused by temperature inversion at about 8000 ft, indicating airmass stability. You get this more in summer, when there's more surface convection than in winter, at whch time of the year with a mild maritime-tropical type airstream such as this, one would just get low stratus rolling in across the country from the SW all day with little power from the sun to burn it off and generate convection. Anyway, it will all cool right off everywhere tomorrow - we can open all windows to let the fresh air in and cool our interiors, in preparation for the heatwave that's expected to start next Wednesday!

It's all very interesting, really, the subject of the weather...

I agree weather is interesting, but I remember as a student that climatology was a subject that I struggled with for some reason. Perfectly able to present a tutorial, and a seminar( an attempt by my tutor to get through my mental block) to my fellow students but it just didn't stick....Do remember being intrigued by anabatic and katabatic winds- but couldn't tell you anything about them now without looking it up.

Very fresh wind, but also very sunny... I didn't get too hot walking to and from the library to volunteer, wearing jeans and cardigan over tee-shirt.

Midsummer Day but not midsummer weather. In the sun/out of the wind OK, otherwise too much cold wind to be anything other than wrap up time outside.

Yes - much chillier than this time last year.

BUT - isn't there still a couple of days to go before Midsummer Day? The Solstice is today (although there was actually a minute's more sunlight yesterday in this bit of the world) but isn't that different from Midsummer Day?

(Hedging my bets, I'm playing The Midsummer Marriage both today and on Sunday.)

People get too hung up on all these definitions which, in any case, are being swept away by climate change, when on one month we can go from having the coldest March weather on record to the hottest ever for April. Now, when I were a nipper... (Contd. P 503)

Maybe seven and a bit. Like my mum, who never revealed her age, would say on each birthday, "I'm twenty-one and a bit"; and the following year, "twenty-one, and a bit more"!

Hope this gets things straight! June 21 is the summer solstice, the longest day, while Midsummer's Day is, as those who know their Die Meistersinger will be aware, Johannistag - St John's Day, June 24.
