One of the greatest - maybe THE greatest British conductor of the last 100 years - was , in truth, an amateur: Beecham.
One of the finest performances of Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring' that I ever heard was that of the Hallé orchestra about 50 years ago conducted by the construction engineer/ scientist Herman Lindars, (whose firm largely built the Jodrell Bank radio telescope) and who, although technically an 'amateur'musican, conducted at a totally professional level.

I'd certainly agree that using "amateur" as a pejorative should be proscribed, Tony - but the word really means "one who loves". I have never been ashamed to call myself an amateur Musician, and would feel at a loss if I were forbidden to continue to do so.

In case that's off-topic, let's call it a "confession" - if not a shameful one!

Indeed they did and very well, and with great recordings to show, but Beecham did it first!

The Korngold is by a massive margin my favourite violin concerto (followed at a distance by the Barber; and the Elgar can still do it for me). The Brahms, Beethoven, Sibelius etc lost their interest for me years ago. The Mozart violin concertos I never found interesting. But I return to the Korngold every time with pleasure, and love hearing different interpretations. (The performance by Ilya Gringolts and the Copenhagen Phil under Julien Salemkou, featured on Record Review at the weekend, brought this home to me).


It's a COMPLETELY different story with piano concertos....
