One of the finest performances of Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring' that I ever heard was that of the Hallé orchestra about 50 years ago conducted by the construction engineer/ scientist Herman Lindars, (whose firm largely built the Jodrell Bank radio telescope) and who, although technically an 'amateur'musican, conducted at a totally professional level.
