And it's a shame that you specified an abbreviated version of the Rachmaninov 2nd as one you respond to negatively, as Paray's 1957 Detroit SO recording, one of the greatest of all, succeeds in spite of, or perhaps inspired by, observing the composer's cuts; just as Knappertsbusch's various Bruckner 3rds seem to take wing, impulsively individualistic and rubato-rich, from the disjointed and discontinuous nature of the poorly-judged editing of the Schalk/Raettig 1890 edition.
"But it's not that kind of thread is it?"
Absolve me, jayne, absolve me!!
(Now I need to hear that Paray recording ! You see - good will come of this thread! )"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Although since I'm here, I guess I ought to make a musical confession of some kind, so I should mention my technique for getting rid of earworms, particularly of the how-did-this-get-into-my-head pop song variety: I tell myself that if it doesn't go away I'm going to incorporate it into my current work in progress. This almost always does the trick. I was once asked by a performer why there seemed to be a quote from the Carpenters' "Close to You" in a certain work. Lux facta est.

I don't know whether Beecham ever composed anything of note.
I don't know if Eric Fenby produced very much original work.
I don't know how the Fairfield Hall drew Bernstein in the 1960s.
I don't know if Hill was officially Australian or a New Zealander.
I don't know if I completely believe that Cardew was murdered.
I don't know if I fully believe that Warlock fathered Brian Sewell.

After my first musical experience - a life-changing broadcast of Chopin's F minor Ballade - I didn't remember at the time who the pianist was (my only excuse being that the music has made such an impact). I only found out some 30 years later as a result of research and would love to have told him about it but, by then, John Ogdon was dead...

My confession lays claim to be the most shameful of all ..... I cannot remember what the vast majority of classic pieces I hear on the radio are ..... !!!! I know I like/dislike it but as to what it is - a blank. It also works the other way if I put on a CD I know I am going to like it but until "the music flows" I have no recollection of what is coming. This applies to everything but, I would guess, about 100 pieces that people hereabouts would throw a brick at if they were played on Essential Cowans .....

I whistle Weberns music a lot.
Well , I tell people it's Webern ( obviously I don't) ,but it sounds like what Webern might sound like whistled.
Note: I like Webern. and whistling........

Good advice, for all concerned, with the quality of my whistling, in any case.Last edited by teamsaint; 11-05-17, 11:14.I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
