There may well be something in that. The reason I can distinguish No 3 is that I once played in a performance (Trombone 1 - very high, written for alto trombone iirc, I was trying to do it on a tenor... [yeah yeah, cue jokes... ])

I liked the 1812 overture when a child. I still do. (Dorati/Minneapolis, original mono 1954 LP, (..."bronze cannon, manufactured in Strasbourg, France...") not the stereo remake, which has an inferior carillon and cannon).

I was watching a Youtube video of my old school, taken before I was old enough to go, but showing some of the teachers whom I remember.
It was accompanied by some rather fine chamber music that I didn't recognise at all. I asked various people what it was, and eventually was rewarded with the answer.
(Embarrassing bit coming up)
It was Schubert's Trout Quintet, a very famous work I had on CD and LP, and which I had taught in some detail when it was an O-level set work. Furthermore, my daughter used to listen to it to send her to sleep.

Hope this doesn't turn into another "I don't like" thread ("I don't like this piece/that composer/the other musician")... there are a few other threads for that sort of thing.

I have in mind something different. For example, the confession that prompts the thread....

Apart from No 3, I can't tell Schumann's three other symphonies apart. I love them all, and have listened to them countless times - love seeing what different conductors and orchestras make of them. There was a very good performance this afternoon, tuned in just after the start. I had no idea whether it was No 1, No 2 or No 4....

Turns out it was No 2 (played by the Zurich Tonhalle under Markus Stenz).

Anyone else got any shameful (musical) secrets?

Well, I was going to say....you need to listen to the Schumann Symphonies more slowly, in fewer recordings, to learn them by ear and by heart and....
But it's not that kind of thread is it..?

Yes that's one of mine too. Except for the godawful abbreviation of Rachmaninov's second symphony which once made me spill my vodka - that, I spotted!

And I have an almost complete inability to chart (or, to be honest, care much) which Bruckner version I'm hearing, as long as it's a good performance.

And now I REALLY wish I'd ignored this thread. All that time and effort on the Bruckner Composers' Thread. In fact, I feel so out of place here I may actually shoot myself.

And it's a shame that you specified an abbreviated version of the Rachmaninov 2nd as one you respond to negatively, as Paray's 1957 Detroit SO recording, one of the greatest of all, succeeds in spite of, or perhaps inspired by, observing the composer's cuts; just as Knappertsbusch's various Bruckner 3rds seem to take wing, impulsively individualistic and rubato-rich, from the disjointed and discontinuous nature of the poorly-judged editing of the Schalk/Raettig 1890 edition.

I'd go one further and readily confess ( to sort of turn a paraphrase of a Prime Minister on its head) that I'd much rather have a bad Bruckner performance of any version than no Bruckner performance at all!

On several occasions, I have allowed myself to be talked into accompanying various singers in two pieces of the most god-awful sntimental-religious claptrap, namely two songs by Fred E Weatherly and Stephen Adams: The Holy City and The Star of Bethlehem. Both of these songs I hate with a passion.
