Wales' new manager

I see there's touch of patriotic fanaticism, touching on xenophobia, taking hold in the principality.

'Welsh football's governing body has ruled out the prospect of an Englishman being named the next Wales manager.

'The Football Association of Wales (FAW) hopes to have a successor to Chris Coleman in place in time for the draw for the Nations League on 24 January.

'"We have always favoured Welsh people because arguably the passion is there," said FAW chief executive Jonathan Ford.

"Somebody said this earlier, Welsh most definitely, foreign possibly, but definitely not English."'

This reminds me of my student days in Bangor. I had (and still have) a number of very good Welsh friends. There was, however, a hard core of Welsh students who would completely dismiss non-Welsh (including Scots), and only converse with other similarly minded Welsh students.

Then there was the Eisteddfod which performed choral music from all over Europe, singing in Latin, German, Italian French and Spanish, as the composers had intended, but English works would only be performed if translated into Welsh.

Such parochialism led to many of my Welsh friends moving to England, where they have lived and worked ever since.


The Welsh F.A. can choose whoever they want as manager of their national team, but unpleasantness such as this is quite unnecessary.


Meanwhile, I hope Wales can again succeed as a footballing nation, as they did in Euro 2016.

Here Wales is a nation as far as its team is concerned but it views all mainland citizens as British to discriminate lawfully against the English.

Which is about as dripping wet - and cowardly - as any nation could possibly be.

It's probably time to change the law but, in the meantime, the first team colours should rightly be yellow.

I agree with every word in your post......and rejoice that they failed to get to Russia.

Brechin City 1 St Mirren 2 Won it with a 2nd half pen,a point off the top

Had a wee trip to the Hedge at Glebe Park today...it's one of my favourite ever slopes - we played uphill first half. Lots of fun but I have to say they wuz robbed. The Buddies had three chances and scored twice and were fortunate that between our goalie, who had a blinder, and the woodwork, we held them out in the 2nd half. Nevertheless, last season at this time we were adrift at the bottom and it's great to see how far our relatively young manager has taken us.

A trip to Brechin's a bit of a mission isn't it ? Sounds like a nice day out , and a good result for the Buddies. Things not looking good for Brechin though, although they are way above their natural level, I suppose.

It was really entertaining game at SMS today in nasty conditions. Nor many chances, but the best of them fell to Saints, although Arsenal thoroughly dominated possession. A fair enough result despite the disappointment of conceding another late goal. But we do look to be heading in the right direction, and are playing some good football.
