Expectations, strange isn't it that Van Gaal was sacked by Manyoo last season after finishing with an identical record to Wenger,5th place and FA Cup win.
The Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel was being talked up as a possible replacement for Wenger earlier in the season too.

I never liked ArsenaL...until that is Wenger arrived and I started to find myself forced to accept them, and of course it was because of the Manager...and some of those electrifying players. He's always seemed decent. Of course, I don't support them and therefore don't really care where they end up, but I was glad they won the Cup...I just like him being around and long may he continue.

Surprised to hear about Tuchel going but I think perhaps he just wasn't Jurgen Klopp, and that wasn't enough.

He's also been mentioned on Palace's Holmesdale messagaboard. However, The New Manager Discussion thread now extends to 138 pages and just about everyone has been mentioned.

I have similar views to you on Arsenal and with good reason post 1993. However the Wenger factor almost makes me like them and is it not uncanny that his name matches the club name. I've never been keen on Liverpool but Klopp has been a breath of fresh air there - could he be one to buck the turnover trend in 21st Century managers? or in the event of a poor run at Anfield will we see him gone?

Managerial changes including temporary managers since 1970:

            Arsenal - 9
            Man Utd - 10
            Liverpool - 13
            Tottenham - 27
            Chelsea - 29
            Man City - 31

A key question might be the club's sense of discipline. It used to be sure-footed but it's less so now. Arsenal's has consistently been proven - in the lengthy tenure of managers Chapman and Allison; the 84 year, three generational, reign of the Hill-Woods; the way in which matches were preceded even in the early 1970s by a live performance of the Metropolitan Police Band; the tight defence and get your haircut ethics of the considerable George Graham; the loyalty to Wenger and the retention of past players in key roles.

Talking about cutting through an Italian defence, Rob, can I please heartily recommend this rather excellent documentary about the 50th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions which I saw last night on BBC 1. Great humour throughout from a time when Scottish teams did stuff - in '67 Scotland became the first team to beat the World Champs, Rangers got to the European Cup Winners final, and this team of local lads, assembled by Jock Stein at a cost of about £40000, reached the European pinnacle.
