I am no 'hater' (what would that mean?) of football or footballerers, and I think it a delight that fans like jayne can get such joy from watching their games.
My loathing is for the effect these over-hyped events have on people, capitalised on by our media and politicians, seen at its most extreme in national events such as this, and the assumption that everyone goes along with it

Sadly, there is apparently nowhere else on the internet left to annoy people, so football haters are reduced to coming onto this thread, apparently to show those of us that actually like football and this thread , OUR thread , the errors of our ways.
We know, we get it. Football isn’t perfect. We know the flaws and issues. We just don't need people on this forum deliberately trying to ruin a great moment for us.
It really isn’t too much to ask.Last edited by teamsaint; 09-07-21, 21:09.I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

Club or Country ? that old chestnut
Interesting feature on Talksport Radio
There are for example Arsenal fans out there who won't cheer when Kane scores for England
So England fans you can only choose one, your club win their league next season OR England win on Sunday
Stockport County champions of the National League next season would have to take priorty for me I'm afraid“Music is the best means we have of digesting time." — Igor Stravinsky

Respect Edge, you are a true fan and a true friend (who always makes me think and smile), true as they come, but.....
This is England, EURO 2020/21.... All are Welcome...... with GLEE......
When the Sainsburys delivery guy came today, we ended up belting this out together!
"Good times never seemed so good
I've been inclined
To believe they never would
But now...."
We are in the rare, very rare moment. They don't come around too often...
(BTW.... after the last three weeks, I've forgiven Jordan Pickford. Imagine that.)Last edited by jayne lee wilson; 09-07-21, 20:32.

The football-haters on this thread.... (why do they keep coming back? Just to upset the true fans who are having the rarest time of our lives?)7
They need to look at themselves. In the mirror. Very closely. Why spoil other's joy, at such a remarkable time, with their prejudice and ignorance?...
"Haters gonna hate", and they will always pick up on those news stories which show - variously, football, or England, in the worst possible light. They are usually ignorant of other sports too - they don't know that such controversies have always existed, in most sports, throughout History (this could be a very long list, including the long and complex intertwining on sport and politics).
. Yet they continue to vent spleen here, when they should just - find something else to do with their time, something else to LOVE, not to HATE. STOP INDULGING THEIR IGNORANT ATTEMPT TO SPOIL. Look at yourselves, vinteuil and ff and the rest!
Are you unaware of the campaigns FOR HUNGRY KIDS, BLM, HUMAN RIGHTS, begun, and supported by MARCUS RASHFORD AND RAHEEM STERLING? (HERO OF THE EUROS) WHO FOUGHT SO MANY BATTLES TO SUCCEED, THEMSELVES?
THIS IS THE MOST DIVERSE ENGLAND TEAM IN HISTORY! Yet you focus on our silly, bandwagonning PM (Old-Etonian Rugby fan, if a sports fan at all), just to make your trivial, mean spirited points. SHAME ON ALL OF YOU AND YOUR IGNORANCE!!
My support of England is not remotely to do with "Nationalism", let alone the crudely destructive Brexit variety. England are my team, just as Liverpool are. I've followed them and all of their fortunes and misfortunes all my life.
But as for "WE".... of course the team you support, the fans, the stadium crowds and the 24 Million TV viewers (for the semi) are.... WE. WE!!!
That is what supporting a team means, and always meant. This is a wonderful moment for such fans, and we won't let others bring us down (including idiots with lasers or those who harass other supporters)...
ALL THE FOOTBALL HATERS HERE ARE DOING IS - SUPPORTING THOSE IDIOTS IN THEIR IGNORANCE! IGNORING THE MILLIONS IN OUR JOY!!
The was bad behaviour from England fans, from Italians in the streets and by police. I saw it , I was there.
But the narrative that is given, and especially in this country, is that “England fans rioted”. But that was just part of what went on .
We should be very careful of the media narrative, and how enthusiasm for a team and sport is interpreted. For every person standing and singing the British (!!) national anthem , there are probably as many just putting up with it because we have to as a quick chat in our work group today showed.
And for every person booing the Danish anthem, there would be 99 showing due respect.
And BTW, I had forgotten through the fog of tear gas what a sublime goal Ray Wilkins scored that day in Turin.

On my first visit to Switzerland in 1981, the papers were appalled and perplexed by the English Supporters' destructive behaviour, at the World Cup qualifying matches and in the towns outside. My students and colleagues kept saying, "we can't imagine you being a part of that"...( a subsequent 1-2 defeat to Norway seemed, even to me, apt punishment).
I tried my best to explain..... being from Liverpool helped, especially when we won the European Cup in Paris, against Real, in 1981, where our support was joyful and impeccable. A lovely dinner afterwards in Neuchâtel, courtesy the Suisses-Italiennes! (Variously supporters of FC Zurich, Juve, Inter....).
Heysel was of course still to come.... and Hillsborough after that. One writer, I forget which, called Liverpool "the Kennedy Family of football". Just so. Ostracism; exclusion. Long and arduous battles against injustice followed. This took many years of slow, only partial, recovery. But there are some things you never really get over. Then finally, in 2005, we had The Miracle of Istanbul. Overwhelming, almost unbearable.. Redemption hardly begins to describe it. Part of a rich, deep, complex and tragic cultural identity.

I'd not noticed before - just how similar Ray Wilkins' goal was to Gazza's dentist-chair 2nd against Scotland in 1996... works of the football art, both...Last edited by jayne lee wilson; 10-07-21, 02:24.
