Jordan Pickford is the answer perhaps? He and Van Dijk, maybe?

Goals against column says you are right about VVD. Liverpool are just the same defensively as the other top 6 except City, for the moment .

It's not a mystery. Lose your best player, ( or your best player in one area of the team,) and it hits you hard, however good the team is.

IMO, Liverpool really need to recruit a world class midfielder, if they want an era of dominance.

Even a team like Liverpool cannot afford to lose a player of the quality of Van Dijk - he is not only a wonderful player, he reads the game brilliantly and he also organises on the field - I recall seeing him in a game at Turf Moor v the southern Saints and he was by a long way the most skillful player on the field - he was organising Southampton's defence throughout - I spent most of the game watching him. He did likewise when he played for Glasgow Celtic - given how well he played last season, he is largely irreplaceable at the moment and his absence has started to show big time in the last month or so.

It isn't just VVD of course; Matip, Gomez, Jota, Fabinho all out, some very longterm. So with Hendo back in the defence (doing heroically well) with very inexperienced reserves alongside him, and no Fabinho in midfield, we've lost that midfield creativity, the Fab-Hendo engine room, especially their ability to move the ball quickly with the angled pass or driving run. We don't lack for midfielders, we just need the holding/creative balance restored. If Ben Davies or Kabak can fit in defence quickly and Hendo gets forward again, things could improve for the CL Tie with RBL - only two weeks away!
Surprised Curtis Jones didn't come on sooner though - in moving swiftly mid-to-box, one of the successes this season. Terrific prospect.

Midfield based around Thiago (World Class) Hendo and Fabinho could be much more effective... alas...

At the same time, teams have learnt to defend better against our wingbacks, and despite some brilliance at Spurs and West Ham, even Trent-Alex's rangefinder goes astray too often now. Jota is badly missed, as Firmino has often looked tired this season and he was the perfect replacement. Even without Van Dijk, we were doing very well when Jota was in the team, every week, last autumn. But now, too often we're going through a packed central defence, too slowly.

After Spurs and West Ham I thought, "great, we're back!" But at home it was a carbon copy of Burnley. Almost made it easy for them. The goal was a freakish double-ricochet, but when your luck's out.....

The Citizens could be 10 points ahead of us if they win their game in hand and seem to be coping without Aguero or De Bruyne, so Sunday is still massive....some challenge to pick a team for that one! But Curtis would be straight on the team sheet for me...

Well our luck returned, but form just gets worse. Well done to AGs boys, who deserved their win but sadly they only needed one bit of luck to survive with nine men, and with a patched up team at that.
A very poor effort indeed from Saints. And that is being polite about it.

I suppose you could say we put a shift in when one was needed .... nice to see Dummett make an appearance .... has always seemed a canny player to me ......

                Millwall 4 Owch 1

I suppose with our league position a hammering was on its way. Wycombe next at home - hopefully back to winning ways then!

They have a high powered new management team, which include Mark McGhee, Alison.
