I would have thought it’s much more linked to the excessive alcohol intake around these tournaments. I have no idea why we celebrate all these fan zones where beer is consumed in vast quantities. It’s not for nothing that the temperance movements were largely supported by women (including the suffragettes ) , socialists and Methodists amongst others. Pre WW1 alcohol abuse and consequent domestic abuse were national scandals .
