Football in its present form really only started once TV started to broadcast "Match of the day" ie wwll within the lifetime of many of today's fans - before this it was fundamentally a local affair - the clubs having in the main been founded post WW1 often by religious organisations with the support of local industries , the mass following was for checking the 'pools' one of the few legal gambles available at the time - once TV became widespread and broadcast rights brought in big money then the fat cat owner became a typical model for the best performing clubs - very much a product of late capitalism.

Played ok, but , you know.....
Now something to remind me of better times - 30 years ago the Owls beat Man U 1-0 in the Rumbelow’s Cup a few weeks before leaving the 2nd tier at the right end. It was the samecday I ran the Stratford-upon-Avon half marathon - I don’t think the sane things will happen again anytime soon as we prepare to go down for the proverbial third time this century!

... I liked Caitlin Moran's contribution -
"As the world of men exploded with fury and sorrow over the planned European Super League — before the whole thing was embarrassingly ditched 48 hours later — some people chose to look on the bright side. Wolverhampton Wanderers, for instance — who, on Tuesday, updated their Twitter bio to declare themselves 2018-19 Premier League champions after they finished seventh behind the six clubs who planned to bugger off and take the football with them.
As we say in Wolverhampton: “To be fair — fair enough.”"

And we won. We got our game back. If Caitlin Moran still thinks football is a "world of men" (Oh for Gods sake - I wonder when she last read the daily sports pages) she is woefully, and self-servingly out of date. (But in the true football cities like Liverpool it was never true anyway, unless you allowed gender stereotypes to dictate your life to you...). Oh how easy it is to write tabloid-style claptrap like that for a cheap bit of football-hating acclaim........
Dunno who was behind the Wolves tweet. They are currently 12th.

(BTW V, thanks for the tip about the mineral water - ordered substantial shipments of the Badoit and Celestins from Frenchclick recently - and in 500ml, much better for me...Cheers for that.)Last edited by jayne lee wilson; 22-04-21, 16:58.

Interesting that the ‘Big 6’ are currently in the ‘Almost Big 9’

I wish individuals will stop mentioning that neither the managers nor the players were responsible. We know they weren’t. You might as well tell us that ten inches of rain is twice as much as five.
Having now had some time to think things through, much as I love Neville’s idea of points deduction, this would be penalising the managers, players and fans.
No, hit the owners where it hurts most – their pockets! They will then of course cry that there is now no spare cash for new players, but I for one, a born-again Man Utd fan, will go through anything to see the Glasers hurt.
Additionally, I wish certain posters will stop trying to defend their team's actions, or that one team was "holier" than any of the others. All six were guilty, and I must admit, Man Utd were the ring-leaders.
