Wolves wont win now. That's the end of my winning run. I underestimated the improved from of Newcastle. Wolves looked jaded.

Sorry to be happy that Toon dropped two points because I'm instinctively sympathetic to their cause but I didn't want them overtaking Palace.

Albeit a draw. Me being a a Newcastle fan, would naturally want a win.

Very sad to read of the death of Gordon Banks .

I never saw him play at Southampton, but back in the day, if you were in goal in kickabouts, you were either your own team’s keeper ( Eric Martin in my case) or Banks.

Anybody on here see him play ? A true great, for sure.

Gordon Banks was amazing. No knighthood for him neither for Booby Moore, Alan Ball and others - A National scandal. Had to sell his World Cup Winner's Medal.

He was in the Fort Lauderdale squad that played a friendly at Stockport late 70s.

Think we need to see THAT save again don’t we.
                    RIP Gordon Banks

One of the true greats of all time - he was my favourite of the England team back then. What a goalie!

I was very sorry too to hear of the passing of Gordon Banks. A modest, normal sort of man from the days in which sport came before money. My mother said that she had worked out that I must have been very young when she had heard my mate Simon and me discussing him. Six or seven, I said. Yes, she said. Nearly half a century ago. What this means is that we were a part of a generation that was alive when England won the World Cup but sadly unaware of the tournament, let alone the victory, having only been aged three at that time. Either side of us is Skinner, born 1957, who would have a memory and more closely Baddiel, 1964, who would not. I hadn't realised that distinction before.

It is shocking that all of the players were not formally acknowledged for their achievements.

                          Stupid country.

The news coincided with the announcements that Micky Thomas, 64, who was playing until the early 1990s, was struggling to raise £20,000 for life saving medical treatment and that Aaron Ramsey is to be paid £19.2 million pounds a year at Juventus. This is 66 pence per second every second, whether playing or injured, and indeed sleeping or awake. Just before the start of the new century, the western world went mad in a way that few under 35 can even begin to comprehend. Simon Jordan, once very much of my parish, and the ex owner of Crystal Palace says that we ain't seen nothin' yet. The players' money is about to rocket via a global system of sports broadcasting akin to Netflix.

                          RIP Gordon Banks -

Coming to this a few days late but I saw Banks play many times against Chelsea for both Leicester and Stoke. Banks at one end, Bonetti at the other. Most memorably in two League Cup finals, a 3-2 win against Leicester in 1965 and a 2-1 defeat to Stoke in 1972. It was a golden era for goalkeepers ( apart from in Scotland ! ) As well as the two mentioned, there were Pat Jennings, Jim Montgomery, Peter Grummitt, Gordon West, Alex Stepney. And into the next generation with Clemence and Shilton, Phil Parkes. One position where football hasn't got better ?

Ah that optimistic Saturday morning feeling before a ball has been kicked and the starting whistle an hor or two off.
