    Bromance confirmed - Kane.

    This referee is c--p, though.

Throw everything up front and wait for the inevitable fouling in the penalty area.

"We" could get about five penalties.

I don't think I can take much more of this. What an uncomfortable, unpleasant thing to watch. Two different footballing cultures? Columbia play a kind of anti-football.

Once again, foolhardy striker substitution.... I can't bear to watch but, moth to the flame, I have to.... I'd rather have Rashford than Vardy so - get him on soon, not sure who for...

I had another double brandy but it wore off in two minutes.

          Very disappointed by the performance.

No change from the last 22 years.

There is no way on earth that we will win the penalty competition.

          None.

I was wrong about what that German bloke was sniffing. It was far worse. In the meantime, Baron Southgate flicks back his hair with nonchalance though intensity in his eyes.

                Whoop-whoop-whoop-whoop.

(I am happy to room share with Harry Kane but I don't/won't do anything else)

I did say at the start of the tournament it would be England through the group stage and then plus one. Proven. I also had France ahead of Germany and Spain - proven - though Argentina as the main tip was wrong.

Deserved win for England. Colombia were pretty disgraceful really.

I wonder if England conserved energy in the first 15 of ET, and hoped to hit them in the second spell ?

Anyway, happy days. Other countries have mastered the art of fiddling their way through tournaments and pulling out a couple of big performances.

Maybe time for a slight shuffle of the pack on Saturday ?

Hugely impressed by the collective will and calm of this squad. Not the most talented group ever, but doing things the right way, and you can't ask more than that.

Can't wait for Saturday........and hopefully more of a good face of England, the country.

And, of course, talkies came in so it all became much more sophisticated.

                      This was July 1932:

Saw these live in an unexpected scenario in the mid seventies.

I won't say who they were supporting:

I had to leave the room and do the washing up, when it went to penalties. I knew it would be our undoing. It always is.

... though the way the commentators were talking afterwards, I almost began to think we might have won.

But that would have been impossible.

Sterling is getting a trashing on radio tonight. He hasn't played well vis a vis goals. Alli is also being questioned because of injury. The favoured replacements are Rashford and Loftus-Cheek. But I think we need to be clear here. Sterling is getting criticism principally because, unstated, he is only 5 foot 7. Apparently he has an 87% pass rate ratio not that this is how it appears. The criticism of Pickford in goal has suddenly changed. So these things can turn around. And if both Sterling and Alli are replaced let us look at the potential goals being lost. In the Premier League - Sterling (18), Alli (9) = 27. Rashford (7) and Loftus-Cheek (2) = 9. Also Alli scored 18 in the previous season and both players have high levels of assists.

Stick with Sterling and also Alli if he isn't seriously injured.

                            Certainly don't replace both.
