La la Land vs. Child Migration...

Am I the only person who is wondering why the Oscars shambles is the top item on the 6 O' Clock News instead of the abuse of children story?

Probably not. I was amazed to see 1) the Oscars as top headline online at all 2) how long it remained No 1 story. No other news apparently.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

The ( more or less) non story about Waterstones was also ranking very high on Google news today.

No, you're not - I was surprised to see such huge headlines on the BBC News website, and for so long. Was it really the most important story in the world for the whole day?

Again, surprise this is news. I was in the Rye Bookshop some six months ago and it was clear to me it's a Waterstones. And the web has made it pretty clear too. No sign of Quaint Irene or Godiva Plaistow, but there was a Rolls-Royce of the period.

The BBC's obsession with celebrity is a constant irritation.

Is that what 'the people have spoken' means?

Not just the BBC - all the online papers have been carrying it as their main story all day long. For goodness sake, it's a minor blip which was cleared up in a matter of minutes. Priorities!

One of the bookshops is in Southwold. There is irony here: Penelope Fitzgerald's "The Bookshop" is set in a Suffolk town which forces its only bookshop to close by indifference and malice. PF had worked in such a bookshop, in Southwold.

I was shocked that the news about the tactics of the Italian Rugby Team yesterday was relegated to the second half of the news.

Clearly things have moved on in Suffolk since PF's day. The novel is bitter about the inhabitants.

                            Amazed too. Utterly ridiculous.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
