No Pop Music questions per se this week - although Pop Songs titles from the '60s were required to be translated from various European languages. As so often, the students didn't know the Pop songs in question.

Film Music for the "proper" Music round - the starter question being Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky which neither team could identify (suggestions: Stravinsky and Musorgsky). Not much better with the composers - as opposed to the directors - of the films which followed, with only Morricone and Leone earning any points.

But - the knowledge of poetry, Art, and Art Criticism was much better: and Piranesi, I noticed, continuing the Ferneyhough theme begun last week.

I'll say! Formidable! (But I so wish he wouldn't gurn whenever a round is announced on a topic with which he is unfamiliar - especially as he then as often as not goes on to answer everything correctly.)

Whenever I hear ".... and asking the questions ....." I hear in my mind's ear, "Bamber Gascoigne"!

Does anyone else have this problem?

Oh yes - but I think of it as a disappointment, rather than a "problem". AND I miss the electronic Harpsichord, Timps and Tubular Bells.

Yes, disappointment! But why I say problem is due to my inability to move with the times! Agree about the music.

In our house the volume goes off for the intro - afraid the quartet (particularly V1) is pretty excruciating!

...it's the pizzicato cello note that is the real damp squib for me.

No Pop Music questions in the past two editions. A "Classical" Music Round and a "starter" requiring knowledge of the repertoire in both weeks, however - with little points earnt in any!

The present series was filmed nearly a year ago, apparently. No mention of music questions in the interview I refer to on the other thread.

The same applies this week - one correct answer in the (four-question) Round, and a couple of other "Classical Music" references in other questions. No "Pop Music" at all again: my earlier suggestion that this repertoire constitutes "about 1/3 of the Music questions" was a wide over-estimation - over the series, it's been more like 1 "Pop" to 15 "Classical" (with something like 4 of those 15 receiving correct answers - some of them clearly "educated guesses").

But some excellent knowledge of Geography, History, Science etc. Y'know - the "proper" subjects.

Well you've gotta know when, where and why you are, innit?

Oooh - I dunno. I've spent most of my life in blissful uncertainty about these!
