Never heard that one! I claim copyright. Well... no... I don't actually; good ideas should belong to everybody.

Strictly speaking, they're self-flagellating, rather than flaying, but the "flay" reference is something I wish I'd thought of!

Are you saying that strong coffee is "the dogs"?

No, they are quite separate things.

Thank you for clarifying. "The dogs" can be a figure of speech.

... but surely with a further word understood (and, except in the primmest of circles, usually supplied) ?

Indeed. I assumed that AM was using anapodoton to avoid the vulgarism.

Not only was I not using anapodoton, I was unaware that it was so called, and, being prim, or possibly too unworldly, or just a stupid foreigner, unaware of the complete expression. I always counsel against the use of argot when speaking or writing in languages not one's mother tongue, the possibilities of giving offence are boundless.
Why, pray, should canine testicles be a term of approval? (None of my dogs have ever had them. They were all absolute bitches.)

ps, isn't this thread about " the things that help us through the day, one way or another"? So, dogs. I cannot imagine life without one. Actually I can, there have been gaps, and I missed them.

Once in a while a house empty, a bath full and the music at a pleasantly acceptable volume...heaven! (Comic optional!).

In case you were wondering, here's R Crumb's take on the question:

Dreams of improving movement in urban areas. Gridlocked roads in inner cities to be replaced by conveyer belts to the width of those roads that have some seats for people in need of them as well as standing space, They would move at 5mph and stop for two minutes every 500 yards. In suburban areas local authority free-to-use bubble car schemes. Tax incentives to producers of fibre glass three wheeled vehicles that can be driven with just a motorbike licence and so light that two people can lift them into tight parking spaces.

The replacement of all remaining motorised milk floats with electric ones. A compulsory pedestrian pavement etiquette test every ten years drawing on best practice in sport and on the battlefield for tactical bodily positioning. To improve cycle safety, all bicycles to be made for two and with the condition there is always a passenger under 12 or over 75.

The M25 to be freed up for lorries and coaches only and the third lane and hard shoulder to be turned into an overhead monorail system. Out of town shopping complexes to be closed to enable towns and cities to thrive and for the buildings in the former complexes to be made into affordable housing estates. All new vehicles to be produced with an attractive individual sculpture or colourful planting on their roofs to make urban environments more interesting to view. A public transport hovercraft system for rivers and canals.
