Ah, good. Glad to be wrong about this.

Let's keep it all civil. And if a forum member breaches the rules, the hosts will deal with that member.

Is that right? Seems more likely, delete the whole thread.

Can't you just please have the same respect for those of us who quite enjoy discussing these things?
It is a "problem" because the Hosts get the complaining PMs and e-Mails: the Thread I closed last week had led to eight e-Mails and four PMs that I had to deal with - in a week when I was on my only holiday this year, and only had access to a Tablet rather than my Laptop. I found myself on what should have been a pleasant, relaxing walk up Mam Tor thinking instead about how I could sort out the Threads - and then realized what a mug I was being, and decided to just delete the Thread and get on with my life. It was an enormous relief - and now that I'm back, I feel - no; I have decided - that that should be how I handle Threads generally. As soon as the PMs and e-Mails start clogging up, the Thread gets shut. End of "problem".

My mind has been non-functioning for the last few days. I hope it's closed for refurbisnments, and not defunct.

ferney, you've just given carte-blanche to the people (they know who they are) who want to shut down any threads that for whatever whim or caprice, they don't like. That is already happening. It's a game.

What if you get lots of PMs and emails about this particular thread, but there have been no breaches of the house rules?

Bet you are glad not to have been trying to have "a pleasant, relaxing walk up Mam Tor" over the weekend. I take it you went the 'easy route', rather than up the face.

I hope your response to complaining PMs and emails will be based on qualitative, rather than merely quantitative assessment. It is not unknown for complaints to be poorly founded, afer all.

I used to cycle along the magnificent Mam Tor road before it was finally abandoned.

ferney, I do so understand - having gone through the same thing for years. And over the years the people (not one individual but several) who cause most trouble are those who declare that people are complaining about opinions just because they don't agree with them. They act as if they themselves are blameless, and will not acknowledge their own fault. Do they not understand how civilised debate is carried out? Or are they devious troublemakers? I pass no judgment on that - I simply express my opinion, how things appear to me.

I spent a long time last week writing a reply to a thoughtful, detailed post on which I disagreed quite strongly, only to find when I came to post it that the thread was no longer there. And I don't blame the host for deleting it.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I used t walk it occasionally in my youth, but that was before it moved that bit too much (the road, that is, rather than just Mam Tor itself).

Absolutely, in both respects - glorious Autumn weather (when I could bring my mind away from other matters) perfect for the sort of "vigorous stroll" that I like.

Oh yes - and this is in reply to BeefO's concerns, too - I'm not so stupid as to be taken in by anyone complaining for the sake of mischief: I only like to give that impression online. So any sudden inundation of complaints - about the Brahms Violin Concerto Thread, as an example (but this applies to all Threads) - will be treated with the credit it/they deserve.

No-one will complain about the Brahms thread, you need think more about the complaints about 'political' threads.

But thanks for the explanation and assurance.

'Civilised debate' is relative to the times we live in. For example MrGG's earthy, straight up expletive enriched communication style, is to me, civilised and for example, is quite mild compared to the interaction in the executive boardrooms that I've sat on up and down the country throughout the years, or my local gymnasium (both examples have very diverse memberships, I'll add). But I understand that in this forum we are more conservative and modest in outlook. It's a hard one, because we have to change with the times, lest we disappear up our own nostril.

Exactly! That's the point!! That's why your comment about the Elgar & Brahms Threads isn't pertinent on this occasion: the Hosts rarely get complaints about Threads in general - we always do about "political" ones in general and Brexit ones in particular.

you need think more about the complaints about 'political' threads.
No I don't; I have spent quite enough time on this matter and I have reached my decision as made clear in #153.

But thanks for the explanation and assurance.
