                      If Michael writes rubbish,
                      Schotz can Tippett.

Gerard Hoffnung in 'Punkt Contrapunkt'. The full sequence is

                      If Britten writes rubbish,
                      Boosey's can Hawke it.

                      And if Michael writes rubbish,
                      Schotz can Tippett.

The joke being that Boosey and Hawkes were Britten's publisher, and Schotz were Tippett's. If anyone doesnt know Hoffnung, do seek out the double CD that features the material originally put out on three LPs. Code is EMI CMS 7 63302 2. Maybe its just my age, but I have seldom found anything funnier. Sadly it doesnt include the material from the original mono 10" LP, including 'The Bricklayer's Tale' and 'Letters from Tyrolean landlords' - I dont know if that has ever been transferred to CD, but if anyone is visiting east Devon, drop in and I'll play it to you.
