Well, you appear to have 'dived in' rather than seemingly wishing to 'duck out', Dave ...

The 'meaning of life' will inevitably demand the inclusion of the 'concepts' of Faith & God.

Without those the answer to that question can only be one thing and therefore blindingly obvious, whether we have Faith or not?

The meaning of life belongs in the self-defining category of "meanings", along with all the rest of 'em.

Simply because there can be no real 'meaning' to anything that doesn't have a particular 'purpose'?

Of course that is not to in any way suggest that anyone without Faith cannot lead very meaningful lives and many do just that, sometimes maybe even more so than some who publicly profess Faith.

However, that is very different from the meaning of life itself? Without a Creator Life itself is ultimately rendered 'meaningless' however 'meaningful' our own lives?

See what you started, Dave ...?

"meaning" and "purpose" are human terms - but does that matter? You can't ask a lion, or dog, or cat or slug if its life has meaning or purpose. I'll leave the "creator" till later.

In December I decided to go back to saying "white rabbits, white rabbits, white rabbits" before midday on the first day of every month.

I lost hot water in December and central heating in January but each were surprisingly quickly and cheaply repaired (the latter today).

"Even Mr. Roosevelt, the President of the United States, has confessed to a friend that he says 'Rabbits' on the first of every month—and, what is more, he would not think of omitting the utterance on any account." – Newspaper article, 1935.
