Good advice re ad blockers, I also donate to keep the sites I use for research and/or enjoy , the internet can't be free and fair.
Seriously can I also suggest you change your default search engine from Google to almost anything else?
DuckDuckGo is a good, genuine and honest search engine.
Google with its paid for search terms, politically infiltrated search results and blatant harvesting of data re your online activity for resale certainly removes any concept of fun.
Maybe you already have? If so, I'd love to hear how you are finding it.

Useful advice, for which thanks, Fi.

I use Adblock Plus and seldom have a problem with ads. I disable it if asked nicely by a site I like which says it helps their funding. But I'm certainly not bombarded with commercial ads. What am I doing wrong?

I just tried looking for "creation of galaxies". Found a straightfoward wikipedia article, and also this - http://solarviews.com/eng/galaxyformation.htm

Firefox said it had blocked an ad in the text, yet in the right hand side of the page there was an advert for MS 365!

This was mild compared with some rubbish I've had appear recently.

I just accessed it - no ads, no nothing in the right hand column … ?

it links to an ad provider so yes it probably does - one bit of javascript seems to be called popunder - maybe dumping an ad - maybe you too browse with javascript off thus these links have no effect assuming even that you follow them.

Thank you. I had not grasped the connection with 'fun' rather than 'ads'.

I changed to DuckDuckGo on reading this and have been quite happy until a couple of of days ago.
I was involved in one of my eternal wrangles with BT and didn't have their number to hand so went to DuckDuckGo and typed in BT Contact Number and up came as the first entry "Ring 0845 650 0015 for BT Customer Service" - I rang this number and got through ...... and being BT who won't send emails or ring you back I was told to wait on the line while my billing problem was sorted. I was on for just over an our and when I checked the online account for my mobile next morning there was a charge for £27 ..... I rang again and checked it and, you can guess it was for the call to an 0845 number and 0845 numbers are not part of my package and therefore chargeable . Anyway BT agreed to withdraw the charges but when I looked more closely at the DuckDuckGo entry there was the dreaded AD beside it for advertisement and it was not a BT link but some call data company ..... There was a link to report this Ad which I did and it now seems to have disappeared so well done them but you really need to be very careful out there .... The internet is often not fun ....
