Dreaming of a White Christmas Tree?

Is it my imagination, or is there a fashion for spraying Christmas trees white? I notice that the one outside 10 Downing Street is sugared with fake snow. And during a trip to France last week, all the municipal Christmas trees I saw were completely white. This is a shame in my opinion; a green and aromatic Christmas Tree was very much the tradition started (allegedly) by Prince Albert...and definitely part of my childhood. In Norway, where genuine snow falls on fir trees, it sits atop the branches and from beneath there is plenty of green to be seen.

Seems so; and (with or without the spray snow) blue lights Equally regrettable imho... I suppose they go better with the fake white spray to make a totally tacky ensemble. But a green tree decorated with nothing but blue lights looks just - wrong.

Those LED lights are much more environmentally responsible, though.

Oh I agree, but they needn't be blue!

Whenever my German girlfriend came over at Christmas time, she would comment on the "tackiness" of our taste over here for multicioloured light decorations.

... yes - we take over the German tradition of Christmas trees etc - and make them more vulgar still.

Trust 'good old blighty' to make the tackiness of Christmas even more tacky.

Neither do your posts actually (I've never dared say that before!)

I have a lovely six foot green tree delivered by a man with a van that has a bicycle on its roof. My decorations are in many colours and people are surprised by its artistry. I think it works because I imagine how Jackson Pollock would decorate his tree. It has none of the order I try to apply to words and is full of shapes suggesting some capacity for movement.

Yet tackiness and tastelessness, taken to excess, can become almost magnificent! A small semi in a village near us is so totally covered with flashing fairies, arc-lit angels, scintillating Santas and rubicund reindeer, that I'm sure a passing Martian (maybe lacking our aesthetic sensibilities) would consider it a work of art.

She should be thankful we didn't also adopt the German habit of displaying bejewelled skeletons in our churches - just imagine the Bling!
