    b. What is Trelawny?
In Trelawny respecting the Cornish, National Anthem the Queen, and HC more tradition but respect for GFH for a good rousing tune!

Trelawny is the Cornish National Anthem:

Here is the finale of the Kernowyon A Gan massed Cornish choirs concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Video taken by Lorna Hamilton.

    TRELAWNY
A good sword and a trusty hand!
    A merry heart and true!
    King James's men shall understand
    What Cornish lads can do!
And have they fixed the where and when?
    And shall Trelawny die?
    Here's twenty thousand Cornish men
    Will know the reason why!

    And shall Trelawny live?
    Or shall Trelawny die?
    Here's twenty thousand Cornish men
    Will know the reason why!
Out spake their Captain brave and bold:
    A merry wight was he:
Though London Tower were Michael's hold,
    We'll set Trelawny free!
'We'll cross the Tamar, land to land:
    The Severn is no stay:
    With "one and all," and hand in hand;
And who shall bid us nay?

    And shall Trelawny live?
    Or shall Trelawny die?
    Here's twenty thousand Cornish men
    Will know the reason why!
And when we come to London Wall,
    A pleasant sight to view,
Come forth! come forth! ye cowards all:
Here's men as good as you.
    'Trelawny he's in keep and hold;
    Trelawny he may die:
    Here's twenty thousand Cornish bold
    Will know the reason why

    And shall Trelawny live?
    Or shall Trelawny die?
    Here's twenty thousand Cornish men
    Will know the reason why!

Maybe he meant 'tiddley' considering the season?

That sums up my Messiah experiences too, except that, with a little pair of baroque timps, I'm usually seated. As I was last night, in Gloucester Cathedral. However, their heating is on the blink at the moment, so I'm sure the audience (who did stand) were glad of any little exertion to warm them up!

a Not officially but many Cornish believe it is or it should be and would favour much greater devolution than is being offered by the Westminster government. The current proposal for boundary changes which would create a parliamentary constituency which would combine part of North Cornwall with West Devon is very unwelcome by the Cornish people.

b I have sung the line hundreds of times and never thought to ask - I will try to find out from my Cornish friends.

c I don't think other bishops had Trelawny's woes or indeed such popular support.

Likewise, here on this side of the pond, the tradition survives very well indeed, if the 5 live Messiahs that I've seen over the years are anything to go by. I'm the village non-believer, so I personally would not stand if it were just me involved. However, with a large audience, that is not the case, so I go with the crowd. As EA and Tapiola noted, it does no harm, and is a perfectly fine communal gesture.

Interestingly, on a recent tour of the US by the choir of Gonville & Caius College, the choir director, Geoffrey Webber, specifically asked the audience not to stand for their stand-alone performance of the "Hallelujah" chorus. So we got to break tradition in that way, with permission .

I wouldn't stand for any of this religious nonsense!

                      Handel? ... Bah!

Nothing to do with religious nonsense at all. Historians have thought that it could have been to do with George II's aches pains and couldn't sit down any longer and needed to stand for a while, as you would have to and ofcourse being a king, protocol demands hat everyone should stand as well!

I have just heard the most unusual arrangement ever, the culmination of Red Priest's version of Messiah, as part of their Christmas concert. A taster here:

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Everyone in the audience loved it, but nobody stood.

                            But no Hallelujah Chorus ...

Red Priest are brilliant - glad you enjoyed them. That CD could find it's way onto my Christmas list. If the HC is on it, I won't be standing, nor for any of the other recordings I might play.

They end their Messiah with the Hallelujah Chorus music but not actually as a chorus, if that's what you mean!

Even so, I was surpised at how sometimes you can almost hear the words in their playing.

Am I right in thinking that the Hallelujah Chorus is not really included in the Advent/Christmas part of The Messiah, but in the Passion section? At school we only ever sang it before Easter.
