Just to say, there's a nice full-page article by Bryan Appleyard in today's Sunday Times.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

              The latest (non-) development.

The body that awards the Nobel Prize for Literature says it has stopped trying to contact US singer Bob Dylan about being this year's honouree.

Also, thanks. Greatly enjoyed the link. Liked his rhythmic knee-work around 2.16.

The Nobel awarding Committee, surely? They give the prize to Bob Dylan and then are mortified that he behaves like Bob Dylan - did they really anticipate gratitude and servility?

Reminds me of the BBCSO when they went to such pains to get Bernstein to record Elgar with them - and then expected him to conduct it as if he were Vernon Handley!

                        Not servility. Simply good manners.

Is he trying to avoid Stockholm Syndrome?

But if they had wanted/expected "good manners" they should have given the prize to ... well, for example, me (and I'd've thrown in a decent measure of gratitude, too). But expecting such behaviour from Dylan demonstrates at best a quite spectacular ignorance of the person they're dealing with, and at worst a completely unmerited sense of their own self-importance.

Couldn't agree more, ferney. It's just Bob being Bob as far as I can see. I imagine it's just a judge(?) trying to catch a bit of limelight. I won't be surprised if Bob turns up; I won't be surprised if he doesn't. What a Bob he is!
