[Adam] Curtis New Documentary All Watched Over by Machines ...

    ... of Loving Grace

this is brilliant and unmissable, thanks to S_A for pointing to it ...
Curtis made the stunning Century of The Self

his documentaries are always deeply thoughtful and stangely poetic, but most of all they offer back events in a new and compelling narrative that emphasises the interplay of ideas and power in shaping our history

in this latest series he traces the neo con and Wall St interest and their interaction with technology from the influence of Ayn Rand ... on for example Alan Greenspan ... though i doubt the Chinese politburo have read Atlas Shrugged ...

[his Power of Nightmares can be seen here]

According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

This should be of very particular interest to at least one other member

A Guaridan [oops! well it makes a change] review here.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

"The ride is certainly fun, though. Television that bombards you in waves and leaves you feeling bewildered and a little bit giddy." says The Grauniad [oops again!] review.

Dunno about you, but that sounds like a typical day to me, with or without television

        Programme sounds interesting, nonetheless

... Curtis made a direct connection between the regrettable business of Monica Lewinsky's red dress and the bursting of the property bubble in Asia, suggesting that Bill Clinton became so distracted by the Lewinsky affair that management of the world's impending economic crisis, which in turn dictated US foreign policy, passed to Clinton's Treasury Secretary, Robert Rubin. It must be frustrating for Curtis that the dramatic fall of former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn, another powerful man allegedly led by his loins, came after he had washed up the coffee mugs and left the editing suite for the last time.

this op-ed piece in the Indie eerily reflects the discussion of power in the film

Recorded for proper viewing when time allows

"The Power of Nightmares" is an absolutely riveting series, anyone who missed them should avail themselves of the link above (brilliant, calum! ).

Curtis informs and convinces and uses the visual possibilities of TV in a really creative way: fascinating work which avoids all the clichés of spoon-feeding documentaries commented on elsewhere in this Forum
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

This was as mad as a box of frogs and the most exciting programme I’ve seen on TV for years. The dream-like visual narrative, mostly eclectically culled from stock archival material, was constructed with virtuosic style, craft and wit. Thanks, Calum, for the link to The Power of Nightmares.

I only said to Henry Kissingthingy, as we came back from Skipton on the bus....did he use the Vietnam War as a shopwindow on Western economic and moral values....His reply was that at that time he much prefered Bloomingdales ....I asked ref his advancement of realpolitik-rapprochement....and that surely the policy of Vietnamization was in fact no different than what is happening in Iraq and Afgahnistan now....he shrugged....and said he was no longer able to go to certain places, in case he got pulled off the bus to answer war crimes....so unfortunately Harrogate was going to be the last stop....

....He does make exceedingly good cakes tho'....

a good review, I thought, in today's Observer by Andrew Anthony - appreciative but not uncritical...

Adam Curtis's latest documentary is beautifully put together – but take its central premise to heart and you've lost the plot, writes Andrew Anthony
