There's no need to believe in words you sing. Singers would have endless problems if they had to.

So no comment on when the penalties for nonconformity might be unpleasant or possibly fatal, Richard?

I would, if I had it - it no doubt provides several minutes of armchair listening.

Well, you could use it to make a weird kind of electronic composition where you'd make collages out of all the anthems, distort them, stretch them out to many times their original duration, and then you could mix in some spoken snippets from your studio sessions, and maybe some breathing and why not also a croupier for that surreal finishing touch... but anything like that would probably have to be taken sitting down.

I've always prided myself on my musical memory and my ability to identify a piece of music with seconds of hearing it. (Obviously, providing I know it in the first place!) Alas, it's diminishing a bit as I get older but it's still pretty intact.

I've always intended to really test this 'ability' by attempting to learn all the National Anthems but it's really hard! There are so many that it's hard to become familiar with them since it's hardly music I'm hearing on a daily basis. Maybe, once I've retired, I'll try again.

Much easier in liberal democracies where the worst that can happen to you is that you might be thought rude or disobliging. So far the only jeopardy anyone has faced is described in vinteuil's post.

That might be preferable to nodding your head and occasionally moving your lips slightly to Hen Wlad fy Nhadau . (I won't post it )
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Why? Don't you know it by heart already?

There does seem to be an awful sameness about these anthems. I mean, do you think the composers of Cameroun's national anthem ("Ô Cameroun berceau de nos ancêtres") might just perchance have heard of the Marseillaise? -

Hymne national du Cameroun chanté par Jacques-Greg Belobo, à l'occasion du cinquantenaire du Foyer du marin, Akwa-Douala.
