The tune is believed to date from either the 17th or the 18th century. Apparently Arne did an arrangement for Drury Lane. That could have been what you heard.

Arne's arrangement (with a slightly different tune) featured in Part One of Suzy Klein's (yes - I know) Music, Mischief, and Morals in 18th Century Britain - it was written as a song of defiance against the Jacobite rebellion in 1745 (approx 51mins 30secs in):

I don't think it gives the 3rd & 4th that ardcarp quotes, does it? His source is interested mainly in the last, anti-Scots verse.

Ardcarp's 3rd came along pretty late in the day I think, largely an attempt to seduce S-A into opening his mouth.

I believe there is un petit truc which can solve that problem, although I assume it is illegal or immoral (possibly not the former, probably the latter). I'm sure somebody with technical knowledge could tell you how it is done.

If it's television, I can't view it either since 1 September since you need to have a TV licence.

I was thinking of the way one can fool a PC into believing it is in a different country (which is how I can get R3 Iplayer - legally, I thought - my last employer provided the facility.) Something to do with the IP address.

You mean using a VPN (virtual private network). Many such programs can be freely downloaded; a popular one is called Hola. Not that I have any experience of these things.

I’m not thinking of finding a VPN application so I can watch Match Of The Day on iPlayer when I’m abroad, so I wouldn’t be thinking about Hola.
