I rarely watch the news anymore and haven't read a newspaper for almost 10 years. I think ER is right about the improvement in mental health. So many news stories are those relating to some disaster or other which we are helpless to do anything about and thus feel even worse about. I used to turn C4 News on while having my evening meal but read a book instead now. I feel much better for it.
    Very sensible!

However I'm currently multitasking - using my laptop to type this, turned the TV on to reorganise my PVR, so now watching the comings and goings at Number 10, while at the same time "listening" to Daphnis and Chloe Boston SO, Munch. You can probably say that I'm not doing all of them "properly" - I wouldn't disagree.

Maybe this is really going to affect my own mental health - very likely.

I don't intend to do this all day, and hope to go to music only mode in a short while.

LMP: Don't hold your breath re having time to play all your unwrapped CDs when you retire. That was my plan too, but hasn't happened so far. Left to my own devices I could probably get through a 60 CD box (e.g Mercury, Living Stereo, Decca boxes etc.) in a month, but other considerations make this very unlikely, at least for the near future.

      He was right.
Problem is, the printed media is nearly all biased - and owned by "non resident for tax purposes" entities who already wield far too much influence. And the Financial Times - widely regarded as independent and balanced - is too expensive and has no access fee arrangement that gives value for money on their opinion and non-business/markets news.

¿Que? How does the affordability or otherwise of the FT affect ER's mental heath? That is the question!

          When did the wittering begin?

For me, it was on 6th September 1997.

The funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales was broadcast on BBC & ITV, with taste, sensitivity and a minimum of commentary. Meanwhile Channel 4 showed cartoons.

BUT Channel 5 broadcast Diana's funeral too. This was quite different from the exemplary efforts of BBC & ITV. The Channel 5 presenter just never shut up, as though it were a radio commentary. Since then the virus has spread, and the BBC has become the most infected of all.

Of course, crass journalism is much older - like the reporter who rams a microphone in front of a Bangladeshi women who has lost her entire family in a flood, asking her "How do you feel?"

Guardian subscribed to and read daily --problem solved!

PS If you read the Guardian regularly you can qualify for a degree in Gynaeocology in a couple of years.

As with most things political at the moment, a case of "wait and see and hope for the best".

Are we now going to become a nation of climate change deniers?
