                        Not altogether sure I agree with you. My mother made soup of various kinds for years, and she never used celery.

                        Leeks, otoh, were always used, best dug from the ground just after the frost had got at them.

                            Absolutely. Very unlikely.

                            On a related note, and this should probably be in the "birds" thread, the grounds at my place of work have played host to a pair of oyster catchers for the last twelve years or so, and each year they raise a brood of young, which we see trotting about after the parents.

                            But as I remarked to a colleague only this week, "Oyster catchers? During all these years, I've never seen them even once with an oyster!"
