                Agreed in principle, although in practice I don't care who owns and runs the rail network and the trains that run on it as long as the business works efficiently and makes a profit that can be ploughed back into improvements; that said, I cannot imagine how any rail business could function without state subsidy at some level.

                            I think you are confusing fees with contingency fees . I think it is wrong for a lawyer to have a vested interest in the result and to take a cut of damages

                              all advice has to be paid for somehow, was the point, even if the cost is hidden.

                              Commission may not be an appropriate way of rewarding financial advisors, but it might not be the worst way in every situation either.

                              Presumably plenty of FAs will spend days doing work for which they receive no reward whatsoever.
                              other reward systems can also be less than perfect.
