Michel Roux Jr. told a young student hopeful that there was a place for the microwave - in the corner, out of sight; handly for defrosting things in an emergency (though nothing like as efficient as doing so by popping them in the fridge, which can have the added benefit of reducing the amount of energy the fridge uses while they're in).

Perhaps if he'd not been on television at the time he might have been less discreet and suggested instead that it's much better to cook a microwave on an open fire...

Quite. In one of those random-generated pseudo-academic pieces I read that "Humphrey[6] states that we have to choose between the dialectic paradigm of expression and neotextual Marxism"; I must admit that Mr Searle never stated anything of the kind to me when I studied with him...

Anyway, in a desperate bid to return to the topic,

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Over a year that adds up to almost a week spent washing dishes!!!!1!! Imagine how many barbecues you could have had in that time!

A potent argument in favour of washing-up!

I'm partial to a bit of outdoor cooking myself, but that's probably because of the years I spent living in Germany, where every public park that's big enough has a dedicated space for such activities, with huge bins to dispose of the detritus, and everyone tidies up after themselves when they've finished. Living in Germany isn't what it's cracked up to be though.

TV ads - especially the ones that try to be funny, but whose sense of humour runs out by the second viewing, and after that...

Then again it could be Lachenmann - I should much rather do the washing up .

Then again it's more likely to be Ferneyhough, although I somehow doubt that even his resourcefulness (fhg's, that is) would run to finding Unity Capsules full of Fairy liquid...
